SUMMARY:Brattleboro Concert Choir: Mozart\, Beginnings and Endings
DESCRIPTION:The Brattleboro Concert Choir presents “Mozart\, Beginnings and Endings\,” in two performances at the Latchis Theatre\, Friday\, Jan. 11\, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday\, Jan. 12\, at 3 p.m. For ticket information\, visit the BMC website at bmcvt.org or call 802-257-4523. \nLeading the Choir will be Jonathan Harvey\, an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choirs at Fitchburg (MA) State University\, who was named music director of the Brattleboro Concert Choir earlier this year. \nThe two pieces on the program are beautiful bookends of Mozart’s musical life. Allegri’s Miserere mei\, Deus holds a special place in the lore around Mozart’s prodigious young talent. The piece was written by Allegri in the late 1630s specifically for worship in the Sistine Chapel\, where he was employed as a singer. According to legend\, the piece was kept guarded there until a 14-year old Mozart visited the Vatican in 1770. Upon hearing the piece once\, and being stunned by its sublime beauty\, he transcribed it perfectly and brought it to the wider world. \nFrom that early influence on Mozart\, the program moves to his last and unfinished masterpiece\, the Requiem. Mozart’s Requiem contains some of his best-loved and most beautiful writing for the voice and takes performers and listeners alike on a journey from the depths of violent hellfire to the heavenly softness of angel voices. \nThe Brattleboro Concert Choir is the Brattleboro Music Center’s oldest performing ensemble\, and was created by Blanche Moyse\, founder of the BMC.

It features the voice talent of Chris Sarandon\, Catherine O’Hara\, Danny Elfman and Paul Reubens and a killer musical score. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times wrote: Part avant garde film\, part amusing but morbid fairy tale\, it is a delightfully ghoulish holiday musical that displays more inventiveness in its brief 75 minutes than some studios can manage in an entire year.” \nAdmission is by donation.

SUMMARY:The Met: Live in HD - Marnie
DESCRIPTION:The Met:Live in HD series continues at the Latchis Theatre on Saturday\, November 10\, at 1 p.m.\, with the North American premiere of “Marnie” by Vermont-born composer Nico Muhly and librettist Nicholas Wright. \nBased on Winston Graham’s haunting novel\, which inspired the classic Alfred Hitchcock film\, “Marnie” is the tale of a beautiful woman in late-1950s England running from a mysterious past\, who assumes a series of new names\, identities and physical appearances. Marnie is caught in her deceit by businessman Mark Rutland\, who blackmails her into marrying him. Stripped of her life of lies\, Marnie is forced to face the truth and her future\, without the deceptions on which she has relied for so long. \nMoving quickly through cinematically structured scenes\, Muhly and Wright illuminate Marnie’s inner life using a variety of musical textures and literary techniques. One innovation of Muhly’s score is its use of a madrigal-like chorus of four women – Marnie’s Shadows – who follow Marnie throughout the opera\, giving voice to her turbulent and confused inner thoughts. \nBorn in Randolph\, Vermont\, Muhly has risen to become a wunderkind of the contemporary musical scene\, crossing genres to collaborate with a variety of other artists. He studied composition with John Corigliano and was a protégé of Philip Glass. He is the youngest composer ever to be commissioned by The Met\, for “Two Boys\,” which was staged at The Met in 2013. He has ties to the Brattleboro area. In 2009\, the Brattleboro Concert Choir commissioned a piece from him and performed “Jubilate” as part of its celebration on Blanche Moyse’s centennial. Muhly has also collaborated with area native sons Thomas Bartlett and Sam Amidon on musical projects. \nThe cast is led by mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as Marnie. Baritone Christopher Maltman is her husband and rival\, Mark Rutland\, and countertenor Iestyn Davies is Mark’s borther. Mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves is Marnie’s mother\, and soprano Janis Kelly is her mother-in-law. \nGeneral admission is $22\, $20 for MET CLUB FOREVER members\, $10 for students. Please contact Jon Potter for questions or advance credit card purchases at 802-254-1109\, ext. 3 or jon@0je.22e.myftpupload.com.

SUMMARY:Nourishing the Inner Artist
DESCRIPTION:A public conversation titled “Sources of Inspiration: Creative Lineage\,” will feature four artists speaking about their sources of inspiration and how these nourish their creative work. The event will take place on Thursday\, October 18\, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theater in Brattleboro\, an ADA-accessible space. Admission is $8 at the door; series tickets purchased at earlier events will be honored. Work trades are available; contact Shantavns@gmail.com or text (802)275-8152. \nFeatured artists include classical musician and long-time arts advocate Zon Eastes\, visual artist and gallery owner Petria Mitchell\, writer Ned Olmsted\, and jazz artist Eugene Uman. Each artist will share examples of their work and discuss how their personal sources of inspiration have helped form and deepen their creative practice. The moderator for the event will be Shanta Lee Gander\, an artist\, consultant\, and Brattleboro Selectboard member. \nSome of the questions we hope the artists will explore include: What inspires and sustains your creative work? Who are the members of your artistic “family”? Do you create out of a sense of evolution and loyalty to an artistic lineage or do you create out of a mission to break with tradition? Is it possible to be influenced by a tradition without being aware of it? What are the boundaries on “borrowing” a lineage from another tradition or culture? \nThis is the last event in a three-part series of forums titled “Nourishing the Inner Artist: Conversations on Art\, Creativity and the Imagination\,” related to nurturing and sustaining creativity in the practice of art as well as in one’s life. The co-creators of these forums\, Shanta Lee Gander and Sarah Bowen\, envisaged them as a series of conversations focusing on questions such as: How do we nourish and sustain a creative practice and presence in the world? Can artists’ experiences suggest ways that we all can creatively contribute to the community and the world in this particular time and place? Bowen and Gander are hopeful that these conversations will interest a wide audience\, from experienced artists to people who are curious about how to be more creative in their everyday lives. \n  \n
