SUMMARY:The Met: Live in HD - Marnie
DESCRIPTION:The Met:Live in HD series continues at the Latchis Theatre on Saturday\, November 10\, at 1 p.m.\, with the North American premiere of “Marnie” by Vermont-born composer Nico Muhly and librettist Nicholas Wright. \nBased on Winston Graham’s haunting novel\, which inspired the classic Alfred Hitchcock film\, “Marnie” is the tale of a beautiful woman in late-1950s England running from a mysterious past\, who assumes a series of new names\, identities and physical appearances. Marnie is caught in her deceit by businessman Mark Rutland\, who blackmails her into marrying him. Stripped of her life of lies\, Marnie is forced to face the truth and her future\, without the deceptions on which she has relied for so long. \nMoving quickly through cinematically structured scenes\, Muhly and Wright illuminate Marnie’s inner life using a variety of musical textures and literary techniques. One innovation of Muhly’s score is its use of a madrigal-like chorus of four women – Marnie’s Shadows – who follow Marnie throughout the opera\, giving voice to her turbulent and confused inner thoughts. \nBorn in Randolph\, Vermont\, Muhly has risen to become a wunderkind of the contemporary musical scene\, crossing genres to collaborate with a variety of other artists. He studied composition with John Corigliano and was a protégé of Philip Glass. He is the youngest composer ever to be commissioned by The Met\, for “Two Boys\,” which was staged at The Met in 2013. He has ties to the Brattleboro area. In 2009\, the Brattleboro Concert Choir commissioned a piece from him and performed “Jubilate” as part of its celebration on Blanche Moyse’s centennial. Muhly has also collaborated with area native sons Thomas Bartlett and Sam Amidon on musical projects. \nThe cast is led by mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as Marnie. Baritone Christopher Maltman is her husband and rival\, Mark Rutland\, and countertenor Iestyn Davies is Mark’s borther. Mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves is Marnie’s mother\, and soprano Janis Kelly is her mother-in-law. \nGeneral admission is $22\, $20 for MET CLUB FOREVER members\, $10 for students. Please contact Jon Potter for questions or advance credit card purchases at 802-254-1109\, ext. 3 or jon@0je.22e.myftpupload.com.

SUMMARY:Nourishing the Inner Artist
DESCRIPTION:A public conversation titled “Sources of Inspiration: Creative Lineage\,” will feature four artists speaking about their sources of inspiration and how these nourish their creative work. The event will take place on Thursday\, October 18\, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theater in Brattleboro\, an ADA-accessible space. Admission is $8 at the door; series tickets purchased at earlier events will be honored. Work trades are available; contact Shantavns@gmail.com or text (802)275-8152. \nFeatured artists include classical musician and long-time arts advocate Zon Eastes\, visual artist and gallery owner Petria Mitchell\, writer Ned Olmsted\, and jazz artist Eugene Uman. Each artist will share examples of their work and discuss how their personal sources of inspiration have helped form and deepen their creative practice. The moderator for the event will be Shanta Lee Gander\, an artist\, consultant\, and Brattleboro Selectboard member. \nSome of the questions we hope the artists will explore include: What inspires and sustains your creative work? Who are the members of your artistic “family”? Do you create out of a sense of evolution and loyalty to an artistic lineage or do you create out of a mission to break with tradition? Is it possible to be influenced by a tradition without being aware of it? What are the boundaries on “borrowing” a lineage from another tradition or culture? \nThis is the last event in a three-part series of forums titled “Nourishing the Inner Artist: Conversations on Art\, Creativity and the Imagination\,” related to nurturing and sustaining creativity in the practice of art as well as in one’s life. The co-creators of these forums\, Shanta Lee Gander and Sarah Bowen\, envisaged them as a series of conversations focusing on questions such as: How do we nourish and sustain a creative practice and presence in the world? Can artists’ experiences suggest ways that we all can creatively contribute to the community and the world in this particular time and place? Bowen and Gander are hopeful that these conversations will interest a wide audience\, from experienced artists to people who are curious about how to be more creative in their everyday lives. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Instructions on Parting
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as “an unforgettable experience\,” the film “Instructions on Parting” had its world premiere last February in New York at the Museum of Modern Art Doc Fortnight Festival and later won acclaim and honors at other film festivals in the United States and abroad. \nOn Wednesday\, September 26\, Brattleboro audiences will have a chance to see Amy Jenkins’ profound and moving examination of transformation\, grief and the collective human journey at the Latchis Theatre\, at 7 p.m. Jenkins will be on hand to lead a discussion of the film after the screening. \nOver the course of one tumultuous year\, artist and director Amy Jenkins confronts the cancer diagnoses of her mother\, sister and brother\, and also welcomes her first child. Her film and video art installations “Flow” and “The Audrey Samsara” were exhibited at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center. SUMMARY:The Latchis' 80th Birthday Celebration - September 22\, 2018
DESCRIPTION:The Latchis Memorial Building is celebrating its 80th birthday\, and Latchis Arts is throwing a party to celebrate the occasion on Saturday\, Sept. 22. \nEveryone is invited to a day-long celebration that will include live performances from 2 to 4 p.m.\, and 7 to 9 p.m.\, special movie programs\, and\, of course\, birthday cake. All special events and activities are free to the public\, as the Latchis’ gift to the community which has sustained and supported it for 80 years. The celebration is made possible thanks to the generosity of The Richards Group and Mark & Liz Richards. Media sponsor is Vermont PBS. \nThe day starts with special film screenings\, all of which have special relevance to the Latchis’ history and mission. At 10 a.m.\, with an eye to families\, we’ll show the animated 2016 movie “Sing\,” which features a group of talented characters who band together to save an old theater. Also showing at 10 a.m. is the 1939 version of “Gulliver’s Travels.” Louis Jambor\, the artist who painted the murals in the Latchis Main Theatre\, painted scenes for the film. At 11 a.m.\, we’ll show “Cinema Paradiso\,” a classic ode to the love of movies. At 11:30 a.m.\, it’s “My Lucky Star\,” a 1938 romance starring figure skater Sonja Henie that was the first film ever shown in the Latchis Memorial Building. At noon\, “Sing” will show again. All these movies are free and open to the public (donations are welcome). Regular commercial movies will be shown during the day at their usual times and at regular admission prices. \nThe screenings of “Cinema Paradiso” and “My Lucky Star” will be accompanied by short newsreels from 1938 as well as the premiere of  “Built To Last\,” a brand new 15-minute documentary about the Latchis Family and the building of the Latchis Memorial Building\, made and produced for Latchis Arts by Latchis Arts board member Jennifer Latham. The film was inspired by Latchis Arts President Gordon Hayward’s 2016 book\, “Greek Epic\,” which tells the extraordinary story of the Latchis Family and the theater empire they built. Copies of the book will be for sale at the event. \nThe afternoon live performance runs from the 2 to 4 p.m.\, in the Main Theatre\, and features the Brattleboro Music Center Flute Choir; Hugh Keelan and Jenna Rae performing excerpts from the opera “Turandot\,” which will be performed in full at the Latchis Theatre in October; Vermont’s clown jewels Gould & Stearns; performers from New England Youth Theatre\, which got its start in the Latchis Building; and\, representing the Vermont Jazz Center\, Wanda Houston & The Mothership Trio\, performing standards from the Swing era when the Latchis first opened. \nAt 4 p.m.\, free movies will continue with “Cinema Paradiso\,” “My Lucky Star\,” and\, at 4:20 p.m.\, “L’il Balzac\,” a film written\, directed and produced by Latchis Theatre staff members and filmed\, in part\, at the Latchis. \nAt 5:30\, there will be cake and cupcakes and general birthday merriment in the Latchis Theatre lobby. \nThen\, the evening performance\, from 7 to 9 p.m.\, in the Main Theatre\, will feature performers from the New England Center for Circus Arts; followed by the Windham Orchestra\, performing Copland’s Music for the Theatre; and capping the night are the youth rockers Moxie\, winners of the inaugural Windham County’s Got Talent at the Latchis last January. \nFor 80 years\, the Latchis Memorial Building has been host to thousands of films\, live performances\, special programs\, fundraisers galore\, community conversations\, political speeches\, dances\, weddings\, graduations\, and just about anything else you can think of. Latchis Arts\, the non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the historic Latchis building and host and promote cultural activities there\, wanted to throw a party that celebrated the role the Latchis has played in the community throughout its 80-year history. \n“It was very clear to all of us at Latchis Arts that the best way to celebrate our 80th birthday was to turn the spotlight around and have it shine on our community\,” said Latchis Arts Executive Director Jon Potter. “This celebration really represents what goes on at the Latchis in any given year\, but compressed into a single\, amazing day. Community performers and arts organizations grace our stage all year long\, and our friends and neighbors fill the seats and sustain us. That’s our essence\, and that’s what we wanted the day to be about.” \nMany of the local artists and arts organizations who present events regularly at the Latchis have come forward to donate their talents for the entertainment of the 80th birthday celebration. \nIn conjunction with the 80th birthday\, there will also be an exhibit in the Latchis Gallery\, featuring photographs and other materials which tell the story of the Latchis Memorial Building’s 80-year history. The exhibit will run in September and October. \nAnd\, the day will conclude with a late-night\, ticketed puppet slam titled Puppet Mutiny\, presented in partnership with Sandglass Theater as part of the Puppets in the Green Mountains Festival. Puppet Mutiny starts at 10 p.m.\, and tickets are $10\, available at PH2018.ticketspice.com/PM. \nAll other special events at the Latchis Theatre on Saturday\, September 22\, are free and open to the public. Commercial\, first-run movies will be shown that day at the usual times for the regular movie prices. Details about the 80th anniversary celebration and about other special programs at the Latchis can be found at www.latchisarts.org.

Cheryl has been president of The Jim Henson Foundation since 1992. The foundation awards grants to artists creating new works of excellence in contemporary American puppet theater. \nThe Sept. 19 event will also include the screening of several short “Dark Crystal” fan films\, which are interesting in their own right and attest to the film’s iconic status. Explore the world of “The Dark Crystal” at the official site DarkCrystal.com.” \nTickets for the September 19 event at the Latchis are $15 and are available in advance at DarkCrystalTickets. Tickets will also be available at the door.

SUMMARY:I\, Claude Monet
DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts’ Exhibition on Screen\, a popular program for visual art-lovers and anyone interested in compelling documentary programming about artists and their work\, returns on Saturday and Sunday\, August 18 and 19\, at 4 p.m.\, with a reprise of “I\, Claude Monet.” \n“I\, Claude Monet” offers a fresh look at the great painter based entirely on his personal letters. Disposing on traditional narration and talking heads\, “I\, Claude Monet” allows Monet to tell his story in his own words. Based on 3\,000 surviving letters\, the film reveals a tumultuous inner life marked by moments of intense depression and euphoric creation. “I\, Claude Monet” also features more than 100 of Monet’s paintings filmed in high-definition\, providing a unique window into his emotional and creative life. The film also features little-know correspondence with fellow impressionists Bazille\, Manet and Pisarro\, and fiery eschanges with his dealer Paul Durand-Ruel\, revealing Monet’s conflicted relationship with the art world. \n“I\, Claude Monet” was originally shown at the Latchis in February 2017\, and was a popular program in the Exhibition on Screen series. The Latchis’ third season of showing Exhibition on Screen programs begins on November 17 and 18\, with a focus on Degas\, followed by programs in February (Young Picasso)\, April (Rembrandt) and August (Van Gogh & Japan). \nAdmission is $12\, $6 for students\, available at the door. \nFor more information\, visit latchisarts.org or e-mail jon@0je.22e.myftpupload.com.
