DESCRIPTION:The premiere tour of Jay Craven’s latest film\, “Wetware\,” will make a stop at the Latchis Theatre on Sunday\, September 30\, at 3 p.m. \n“Wetware” is a film noir set in a near future where there are tough and tedious jobs that no one wants\, and people at the end of their rope who will do anything for a sense of security and well-being. And will these altered prototypes still be considered human? Briggs experiments\, changing the codes. Then his prototypes escape – and Briggs makes a discovery that changes everything. \nThe cast includes: Cameron Scoggins (The Deuce\, Nashville)\, Morgan Wolk (The Affair\, Miles Ahead)\, Bret Lada (Law and Order)\, Jerry O’Connell (Stand By Me\, Jerry McGuire)\, Nicole Shalhoub (The Good Wife\, Madame Secretary)\, Aurélia Thiérrée (Aurelia’s Oratorio\, Bells and Spells)\, Matt Salinger (24\, Captain America)\, Garret Lee Hicks (The Americans)\, Rusty DeWees (The Logger\, A Stranger in the Kingdom)\, Ariel Zevon (ER\, Strong Medicine) and Emmy-winner Gordon Clapp (NYPD Blue). \nThe screening at the Latchis will be followed by a Q&A with director Jay Craven and lead actress Morgan Wolk. \nTickets $15\, front orchestra $10 rear orchestra and balcony\, available in advance at WetwareTickets

SUMMARY:Instructions on Parting
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as “an unforgettable experience\,” the film “Instructions on Parting” had its world premiere last February in New York at the Museum of Modern Art Doc Fortnight Festival and later won acclaim and honors at other film festivals in the United States and abroad. \nOn Wednesday\, September 26\, Brattleboro audiences will have a chance to see Amy Jenkins’ profound and moving examination of transformation\, grief and the collective human journey at the Latchis Theatre\, at 7 p.m. Jenkins will be on hand to lead a discussion of the film after the screening. \nOver the course of one tumultuous year\, artist and director Amy Jenkins confronts the cancer diagnoses of her mother\, sister and brother\, and also welcomes her first child. Crafted in a unique visual style\, the film weaves breathtaking vignettes of natural unfolding with cinema verite family footage to lead viewers to a bold and daring acceptance of our common mortality. Made from Jenkins’ video journals and narrated through archived answering machine messages\, “Instructions on Parting” is both deeply personal and profoundly universal. \n“A deeply moving\, tautly poetical diary of multiple loss … Transcendent insights folded into the film’s rich\, rhythmic structure\, stay with you long after the ending\,” wrote David Broady of Artcritical. \nThe Peterborough\, N.H.-based Jenkins may be familiar to Brattleboro art audiences. Her film and video art installations “Flow” and “The Audrey Samsara” were exhibited at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center. Jenkins’ installations\, films and photography have been exhibited\, screened and collected internationally. He works focus on themes such as familial relationships\, desire and gender identity and have been featured at The Museum of Modern Art in New York\, the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, the Haifa Museum in Israel and countless other art institutions. Jenkins was chosen to be a LEF Foundation Robert Flaherty Film Seminar Fellow and a two-time nominee for the CalArts Alpert Award in Film/Video. View a trailer on the film website at www.on-parting.com \n“Instructions on Parting” is presented in partnership between Latchis Arts\, Brattleboro Area Hospice and the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center. \nTickets are $12\, $8 for students\, available at the door. SUMMARY:The Latchis' 80th Birthday Celebration - September 22\, 2018
DESCRIPTION:The Latchis Memorial Building is celebrating its 80th birthday\, and Latchis Arts is throwing a party to celebrate the occasion on Saturday\, Sept. 22. \nEveryone is invited to a day-long celebration that will include live performances from 2 to 4 p.m.\, and 7 to 9 p.m.\, special movie programs\, and\, of course\, birthday cake. All special events and activities are free to the public\, as the Latchis’ gift to the community which has sustained and supported it for 80 years. The celebration is made possible thanks to the generosity of The Richards Group and Mark & Liz Richards. Media sponsor is Vermont PBS. \nThe day starts with special film screenings\, all of which have special relevance to the Latchis’ history and mission. At 10 a.m.\, with an eye to families\, we’ll show the animated 2016 movie “Sing\,” which features a group of talented characters who band together to save an old theater. Also showing at 10 a.m. is the 1939 version of “Gulliver’s Travels.” Louis Jambor\, the artist who painted the murals in the Latchis Main Theatre\, painted scenes for the film. At 11 a.m.\, we’ll show “Cinema Paradiso\,” a classic ode to the love of movies. At 11:30 a.m.\, it’s “My Lucky Star\,” a 1938 romance starring figure skater Sonja Henie that was the first film ever shown in the Latchis Memorial Building. At noon\, “Sing” will show again. All these movies are free and open to the public (donations are welcome). Regular commercial movies will be shown during the day at their usual times and at regular admission prices. \nThe screenings of “Cinema Paradiso” and “My Lucky Star” will be accompanied by short newsreels from 1938 as well as the premiere of  “Built To Last\,” a brand new 15-minute documentary about the Latchis Family and the building of the Latchis Memorial Building\, made and produced for Latchis Arts by Latchis Arts board member Jennifer Latham. The film was inspired by Latchis Arts President Gordon Hayward’s 2016 book\, “Greek Epic\,” which tells the extraordinary story of the Latchis Family and the theater empire they built. Copies of the book will be for sale at the event. \nThe afternoon live performance runs from the 2 to 4 p.m.\, in the Main Theatre\, and features the Brattleboro Music Center Flute Choir; Hugh Keelan and Jenna Rae performing excerpts from the opera “Turandot\,” which will be performed in full at the Latchis Theatre in October; Vermont’s clown jewels Gould & Stearns; performers from New England Youth Theatre\, which got its start in the Latchis Building; and\, representing the Vermont Jazz Center\, Wanda Houston & The Mothership Trio\, performing standards from the Swing era when the Latchis first opened. \nAt 4 p.m.\, free movies will continue with “Cinema Paradiso\,” “My Lucky Star\,” and\, at 4:20 p.m.\, “L’il Balzac\,” a film written\, directed and produced by Latchis Theatre staff members and filmed\, in part\, at the Latchis. \nAt 5:30\, there will be cake and cupcakes and general birthday merriment in the Latchis Theatre lobby. \nThen\, the evening performance\, from 7 to 9 p.m.\, in the Main Theatre\, will feature performers from the New England Center for Circus Arts; followed by the Windham Orchestra\, performing Copland’s Music for the Theatre; and capping the night are the youth rockers Moxie\, winners of the inaugural Windham County’s Got Talent at the Latchis last January. \nFor 80 years\, the Latchis Memorial Building has been host to thousands of films\, live performances\, special programs\, fundraisers galore\, community conversations\, political speeches\, dances\, weddings\, graduations\, and just about anything else you can think of. Latchis Arts\, the non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the historic Latchis building and host and promote cultural activities there\, wanted to throw a party that celebrated the role the Latchis has played in the community throughout its 80-year history. \n“It was very clear to all of us at Latchis Arts that the best way to celebrate our 80th birthday was to turn the spotlight around and have it shine on our community\,” said Latchis Arts Executive Director Jon Potter. “This celebration really represents what goes on at the Latchis in any given year\, but compressed into a single\, amazing day. Community performers and arts organizations grace our stage all year long\, and our friends and neighbors fill the seats and sustain us. That’s our essence\, and that’s what we wanted the day to be about.” \nMany of the local artists and arts organizations who present events regularly at the Latchis have come forward to donate their talents for the entertainment of the 80th birthday celebration. \nIn conjunction with the 80th birthday\, there will also be an exhibit in the Latchis Gallery\, featuring photographs and other materials which tell the story of the Latchis Memorial Building’s 80-year history. The exhibit will run in September and October. \nAnd\, the day will conclude with a late-night\, ticketed puppet slam titled Puppet Mutiny\, presented in partnership with Sandglass Theater as part of the Puppets in the Green Mountains Festival. Puppet Mutiny starts at 10 p.m.\, and tickets are $10\, available at PH2018.ticketspice.com/PM. \nAll other special events at the Latchis Theatre on Saturday\, September 22\, are free and open to the public. Commercial\, first-run movies will be shown that day at the usual times for the regular movie prices. Details about the 80th anniversary celebration and about other special programs at the Latchis can be found at www.latchisarts.org.

SUMMARY:I\, Claude Monet
DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts’ Exhibition on Screen\, a popular program for visual art-lovers and anyone interested in compelling documentary programming about artists and their work\, returns on Saturday and Sunday\, August 18 and 19\, at 4 p.m.\, with a reprise of “I\, Claude Monet.” \n“I\, Claude Monet” offers a fresh look at the great painter based entirely on his personal letters. Disposing on traditional narration and talking heads\, “I\, Claude Monet” allows Monet to tell his story in his own words. Based on 3\,000 surviving letters\, the film reveals a tumultuous inner life marked by moments of intense depression and euphoric creation. “I\, Claude Monet” also features more than 100 of Monet’s paintings filmed in high-definition\, providing a unique window into his emotional and creative life. The film also features little-know correspondence with fellow impressionists Bazille\, Manet and Pisarro\, and fiery eschanges with his dealer Paul Durand-Ruel\, revealing Monet’s conflicted relationship with the art world. \n“I\, Claude Monet” was originally shown at the Latchis in February 2017\, and was a popular program in the Exhibition on Screen series. The Latchis’ third season of showing Exhibition on Screen programs begins on November 17 and 18\, with a focus on Degas\, followed by programs in February (Young Picasso)\, April (Rembrandt) and August (Van Gogh & Japan). \nAdmission is $12\, $6 for students\, available at the door. \nFor more information\, visit latchisarts.org or e-mail jon@0je.22e.myftpupload.com.

DESCRIPTION:The Vermont premiere of LOVE\, GILDA\, a film by Lisa D’Apolito about the life of comedian Gilda Radner\, is scheduled for Gallery Walk Friday\, August 3\, at 6:30 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St.\, Brattleboro\, Vermont.  The screening is a benefit to support Kopkind/CID film retreats.  D’Apolito will be on hand for a Q&A after the screening. \nD’Apolito\, director and producer of LOVE\, GILDA\, originally shared the idea of the documentary with fellow Kopkind/CID filmmakers in 2014.  For the last 13 years\, Susi Walsh\, CID co-founder (1981) and executive director\, has collaborated with Guilford resident John Scagliotti to offer film camp retreats on his farm.  Scagliotti is an Emmy Award-winning documentary producer and the creator of the public television series In the Life – the monthly hour-long program on news and culture about the gay community that ran on PBS from 1992-2012. \nReturning to Kopkind/CID three years later\, D’Apolito sought feedback on final edits before submission to the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival in New York.  In April\, LOVE\, GILDA opened the prestigious event. \nNow in its 19th year\, The Kopkind Colony and the Center for Independent Documentary (CID) will combine forces during the first week in August to provide filmmakers a place to workshop their films in progress. The Kopkind/CID Film Camp is held at Treefrog Farm in Guilford\, a mountaintop haven that encourages filmmakers to engage in deep conversation\, reflection and a chance to recharge from the intensity of independent filmmaking. \nCID’s Walsh understands the power of the unique role that Kopkind/CID offers to independent filmmakers.  “Over 120 filmmakers have joined us up at Kopkind over the years\, bringing their diverse and inspiring films to be workshopped in a truly supportive space with their peers. Filmmakers have formed lasting partnerships\, networks and collaborations with their fellow campers—many of them coming back at different stages in their film.  And that was the case for Lisa.  She first came in 2014 when she was early on in the process—and then again last year as she was close to the end and wanting feedback on her edit.  We are proud to be ‘early and often’ supporters of so many great filmmakers!” \nThe Kopkind Colony is a living memorial to the late journalist and Guilford resident\, Andrew Kopkind\, based at Tree Frog Farm in Guilford\, Vermont where Kopkind did much of his writing and where his archives are housed. He wrote on politics and culture with a matchless style and depth for national and international publications until his death\, in 1994. The Kopkind Colony has been sponsoring public movies\, lectures and performances in Guilford and Brattleboro since 1999. \nIn addition to his role at the Kopkind Colony\, Scagliotti programs Vermont’s LGBTQ Short Film Festival CineSLAM\, which takes place at the Latchis Theatre during June Pride. \nTickets for LOVE\, GILDA are $12 and can be purchased on the Cine SLAM website:  http://cineslam.com. SUMMARY:CineSLAM LGBTQ Short Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:CineSLAM returns to the Latchis Theatre on Saturday\, June 30\, at 4:30 p.m. CineSLAM is a Pride Film Festival of Shorts and is Vermont’s first LGBTQ film festival\, now celebrating its 12th year. \nThe festival this year focuses on LGBT history. Leading off the festival is local author Allen Young\, who will read a short excerpt from his new book\, “left gay & green\, a writer’s life\,” as he celebrates his 77th birthday. \nThere will also be a tribute short film to the many historians and archivists saving LGBT history. Making its Vermont premiere\, “We Started with an Old Shoe Box” takes a look at how small and independent groups of gay and lesbian archivists began reconstructing the fragmented story of the LGBT past. And\, in a short piece\, “Before Stonewall” looks at the youth movement of the ’60s to see how important counterculture was in building for the Stonewall Uprising. \nLocal history is also highlighted. CineSLAM will show a clip from HB Lozito’s “Andrews Inn Oral History Project.” This short video is an excerpt interview with Jeremy Youst accompanied by photos by Evie Lovett and slides by Youst. The project looks at the history of Andrew’s Inn\, a disco\, bar\, hotel and community space catering to the LGBTQ community in Bellows Falls from 1973-84. Lozito is the executive director of Green Mountain Crossroads\, which works to build power of rural LGBTQ people. \nCineSLAM has more local flavor this year with a selection from “Out Here.” This documentary was an official selection of the Frameline Film Festival and explores the hearts and hard work of queer farmers in the U.S. It was made by Green Mountain Crossroads board member Jonah Mossberg. \nCineSLAM will also present the theatrical premiere of “The Fathers Project” from filmmaker Leo Herrera\, which imagines what the world might be like today if AIDS had never happened. \nAdmission to CineSLAM is $10\, and includes all the films and a Pride cake and sparkling cider. The event is underwritten by a grant from the Chessie Foundation. To reserve a ticket\, visit www.cineslam.com or e-mail stonewal@sover.net.
