SUMMARY:Love\, Gilda
DESCRIPTION:The Vermont premiere of LOVE\, GILDA\, a film by Lisa D’Apolito about the life of comedian Gilda Radner\, is scheduled for Gallery Walk Friday\, August 3\, at 6:30 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St.\, Brattleboro\, Vermont.  The screening is a benefit to support Kopkind/CID film retreats.  D’Apolito will be on hand for a Q&A after the screening. \nD’Apolito\, director and producer of LOVE\, GILDA\, originally shared the idea of the documentary with fellow Kopkind/CID filmmakers in 2014.  For the last 13 years\, Susi Walsh\, CID co-founder (1981) and executive director\, has collaborated with Guilford resident John Scagliotti to offer film camp retreats on his farm.  Scagliotti is an Emmy Award-winning documentary producer and the creator of the public television series In the Life – the monthly hour-long program on news and culture about the gay community that ran on PBS from 1992-2012. \nReturning to Kopkind/CID three years later\, D’Apolito sought feedback on final edits before submission to the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival in New York.  In April\, LOVE\, GILDA opened the prestigious event. \nNow in its 19th year\, The Kopkind Colony and the Center for Independent Documentary (CID) will combine forces during the first week in August to provide filmmakers a place to workshop their films in progress. The Kopkind/CID Film Camp is held at Treefrog Farm in Guilford\, a mountaintop haven that encourages filmmakers to engage in deep conversation\, reflection and a chance to recharge from the intensity of independent filmmaking. \nCID’s Walsh understands the power of the unique role that Kopkind/CID offers to independent filmmakers.  “Over 120 filmmakers have joined us up at Kopkind over the years\, bringing their diverse and inspiring films to be workshopped in a truly supportive space with their peers. Filmmakers have formed lasting partnerships\, networks and collaborations with their fellow campers—many of them coming back at different stages in their film.  And that was the case for Lisa.  She first came in 2014 when she was early on in the process—and then again last year as she was close to the end and wanting feedback on her edit.  We are proud to be ‘early and often’ supporters of so many great filmmakers!” \nThe Kopkind Colony is a living memorial to the late journalist and Guilford resident\, Andrew Kopkind\, based at Tree Frog Farm in Guilford\, Vermont where Kopkind did much of his writing and where his archives are housed. He wrote on politics and culture with a matchless style and depth for national and international publications until his death\, in 1994. The Kopkind Colony has been sponsoring public movies\, lectures and performances in Guilford and Brattleboro since 1999. \nIn addition to his role at the Kopkind Colony\, Scagliotti programs Vermont’s LGBTQ Short Film Festival CineSLAM\, which takes place at the Latchis Theatre during June Pride. \nTickets for LOVE\, GILDA are $12 and can be purchased on the Cine SLAM website:  http://cineslam.com. For more information\, contact John Scagliotti\, Kopkind Administrator:  stonewal@sover.net

SUMMARY:CineSLAM LGBTQ Short Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:CineSLAM returns to the Latchis Theatre on Saturday\, June 30\, at 4:30 p.m. CineSLAM is a Pride Film Festival of Shorts and is Vermont’s first LGBTQ film festival\, now celebrating its 12th year. \nThe festival this year focuses on LGBT history. Leading off the festival is local author Allen Young\, who will read a short excerpt from his new book\, “left gay & green\, a writer’s life\,” as he celebrates his 77th birthday. \nThere will also be a tribute short film to the many historians and archivists saving LGBT history. Making its Vermont premiere\, “We Started with an Old Shoe Box” takes a look at how small and independent groups of gay and lesbian archivists began reconstructing the fragmented story of the LGBT past. And\, in a short piece\, “Before Stonewall” looks at the youth movement of the ’60s to see how important counterculture was in building for the Stonewall Uprising. \nLocal history is also highlighted. CineSLAM will show a clip from HB Lozito’s “Andrews Inn Oral History Project.” This short video is an excerpt interview with Jeremy Youst accompanied by photos by Evie Lovett and slides by Youst. The project looks at the history of Andrew’s Inn\, a disco\, bar\, hotel and community space catering to the LGBTQ community in Bellows Falls from 1973-84. Lozito is the executive director of Green Mountain Crossroads\, which works to build power of rural LGBTQ people. \nCineSLAM has more local flavor this year with a selection from “Out Here.” This documentary was an official selection of the Frameline Film Festival and explores the hearts and hard work of queer farmers in the U.S. It was made by Green Mountain Crossroads board member Jonah Mossberg. \nCineSLAM will also present the theatrical premiere of “The Fathers Project” from filmmaker Leo Herrera\, which imagines what the world might be like today if AIDS had never happened. \nAdmission to CineSLAM is $10\, and includes all the films and a Pride cake and sparkling cider. The event is underwritten by a grant from the Chessie Foundation. To reserve a ticket\, visit www.cineslam.com or e-mail stonewal@sover.net.

DESCRIPTION:The Windham Orchestra spotlights two musical geniuses in a special concert Sunday\, April 8\, at 3 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St. \nTwo profoundly different works — Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor\, Op. 15 by Brahms and Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony — are on the program. Brahms’ work opens the concert\, with Windham Orchestra Musical Director Hugh Keelan at the piano\, and Jessie Pierpont as guest conductor. Keelan describes the Piano Concerto as a work conjuring up “a single man staring down the universe\, a solo protagonist\, incredibly sure of himself.” \nIt is a dramatic\, powerful work\, says Keelan\, who points out that Brahms and his contemporaries were creating music in the colossal shadow cast by Beethoven. He notes\, in fact\, that Brahms’ First Symphony is often referred to as “Beethoven’s 10th.” \n The second piece performed\, Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony (Symphony No. 6)\, is as gentle as Brahms’ work is powerful\, and will take the audience on what Keelan calls “an emotional journey\, to a profound\, pastoral calm.” He adds\, “It is an absolutely extraordinary work\, not like anything else Beethoven created.” \nThe cost of admission is a donation of any amount. SUMMARY:Lil' Balzac
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, April 6\, the world will finally have a chance to meet Lil’ Balzac\, a wannabe rapper willing to go the extra mile to realize his dreams of working with his favorite record producer. \nLil Balzac is the title character of a homegrown 30-minute absurdist comedy film shot in Brattleboro with a local cast and crew. It will have its first preview screening on April 6\, from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre\, a fitting place for the film’s debut. \n“Lil’ Balzac” was born in the imaginations of Latchis Theatre staff members Austin Rice and Alexander Passino. \n“Alex and I came up with the idea of Lil Balzac when we were both working at the Latchis Theatre. It’s cool that it started in the theater lobby and now it’s premiering in the Main Theatre\,” said Rice\, who is the film’s director\, co-writer and co-producer. \nThe April 6 event includes the debut showing of the film\, a Q&A with many of the people involved in it\, and a gag reel. Admission is by suggested donation of $5 – more is welcome – with proceeds going to support Rice’s next project. \nPassino stars as Lil Balzac\, a wannabe rapper who believes he just got his big break – the chance to work with his favorite producer. The trouble is\, he needs $4\,000 to pull it off\, and he’s actually just a dirt broke stoner living in a tent. Determined to realize his dream\, he jumps at the chance to raise the money by facing off  against an undefeated beast of a man in an underground fight club. What happens? Well\, you just have to see for yourself. \n“Lil Balzac” is the latest project for Rice\, who honed his filmmaking skills at The Compass School and River Valley Tech Center. He screened one of his earliest films\, “Noah\,” at the Latchis Theatre in 2011 when he was 17. Four years later\, he screened short comedic films during the Local Artists Showcase at the Latchis. He has also taught film at The Compass School and done videography and editing for several other local projects. \nTwo-and-a-half years in the making and filmed at many locations throughout Brattleboro\, “Lil Balzac” may have started as the brainchild of two friends and colleagues at the Latchis Theatre\, but it quickly grew to encompass the talents of many other local people. \nIn addition to Passino\, the cast includes Joshua Cunningham\, Jan Van Oene\, Maechyl Lloyd\, David Lloyd\, Teo Radev\, Darren Goldsmith\, Joel Kaemmerlen and Keely Eastley. Music is by Jan Van Oene\, Maechyl Lloyd and Evan Lincoln. Rice reached as far as Boston for help with animation by Steff Egan. \nThen there’s local filmmaker\, editor and videographer Angus Reid\, who was first pulled in as a last-minute substitute for a day of filming but became more and more involved\, eventually serving as director of photography\, visual and special effects director and\, ultimately\, co-producer. \n“I think it will surprise people as a highly entertaining\, watchable\, and sneakily impressive piece of work\,” said Reid. “Though I know that a stoner comedy about a total loser won’t be everyone’s cup of tea\, I do think it will find its audience\, and if it does\, what I would love to hear from them as they file out of the Latchis is: ‘Wow\, I can’t believe that was made here in Brattleboro.’” \nAfter the April 6 world premiere\, Rice is hoping to enter “Lil’ Balzac” in festivals\, and he’s hard at work on two screenplays. \nThe film is not rated\, but if it were\, it would probably carry a PG-13 tag for profanity and drug references.
