DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts’ Exhibition on Screen series continues with “Cézanne – Portraits of a Life” to be presented at the Latchis Theatre on Saturday and Sunday\, April 21 and 22\, at 4 p.m. \nThe Exhibition on Screen series is dedicated to bringing world class art and artists to cinemas. “Cézanne – Portraits of a Life” is based on an exhibition of Cézanne portraits at the National Portrait Gallery in London\, Musee d’Orsay in Paris and National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C. \nOver his life\, Cézanne painted almost 1\,000 paintings\, 200 of which were portraits. The exhibition\, billed by art critics as “once in a lifetime”\, brings together\, for the first time since Cézanne’s death\, 50 of these portraits from private and public collections all around the world. \nThese portraits provide the backbone of a moving\, new cinematic look at Cézanne’s life. In addition to offering an unprecedented level of insight into the exhibition\, the film also features interviews with curators\, art experts and the artist’s great-grandson Philippe Cézanne. DESCRIPTION:The Latchis Theatre hosts a screening of “Vanishing Kings: Desert Lions of the Namib” presented by CLAWS Conservancy in advance of Earth Day on Saturday\, April 21\, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.\, \nIn honor of Earth Day weekend\, please join us for the free screening with donations accepted for CLAWS Conservancy. “Vanishing Kings: Desert Lions of the Namib” is a visually stunning film depicting a lion population on the edge.  This small population has ventured into the oldest desert on the planet and managed to survive – for now. Learn how these desert-adapted lions make a living and the challenges they face. \nImmediately following the screening\, learn about conservation efforts to protect lions in Northern Botswana by National Geographic Explorer Dr. Andrew Stein\, who is the founder of the CLAWS Conservancy\, a non-profit organization dedicated to human-wildlife coexistence\, and Associate Professor at Landmark College in Putney. He has been working with communities across Africa to promote coexistence with large predators over the past 17 years. He will share his current work and answer questions about the state of big cat conservation in Africa. \nAlthough admission is free\, this is a limited ticketed event so be sure to reserve your spot at clawsconservancy.eventbrite.com.  Tickets will also be available at the door. DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts’ Exhibition on Screen series continues with “Cézanne – Portraits of a Life” to be presented at the Latchis Theatre on Saturday and Sunday\, April 21 and 22\, at 4 p.m. \nThe Exhibition on Screen series is dedicated to bringing world class art and artists to cinemas. “Cézanne – Portraits of a Life” is based on an exhibition of Cézanne portraits at the National Portrait Gallery in London\, Musee d’Orsay in Paris and National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C. \nOver his life\, Cézanne painted almost 1\,000 paintings\, 200 of which were portraits. The exhibition\, billed by art critics as “once in a lifetime”\, brings together\, for the first time since Cézanne’s death\, 50 of these portraits from private and public collections all around the world. \nThese portraits provide the backbone of a moving\, new cinematic look at Cézanne’s life. In addition to offering an unprecedented level of insight into the exhibition\, the film also features interviews with curators\, art experts and the artist’s great-grandson Philippe Cézanne. The movies will be shown the first four Sundays in April\, starting with April Fools Day itself\, at 4 p.m. Admission is by donation to benefit Latchis Arts. \n“Spring is coming\, but I think we could all use some silliness to bring a few laughs to April\,” said Jon Potter\, executive director of Latchis Arts. \nThe Aprils Fools series continues on April 8 at 4 p.m. with “Clueless\,” the 1995 comedy-romance that reimagines Jane Austen’s “Emma” into a fresh\, satirical look at ultra-rich teenagers in Beverly Hills. It stars Alicia Silverstone\, Stacy Dash and Paul Rudd. Rotten Tomatoes gives it an 81% critics score and 76% audience score. It is Rated PG-13. \nOn April 15\, the series gets shagadelic with “Austin Powers – International Man of Mystery.” Mike Myers stars in this comedy\, action adventure\, spy movie parody as swinging 60s mod hipster spy Austin Powers\, and as his nemesis Dr. Evil. This film is very groovy and is Rated PG-13. Film Threat critic Brad Laidman said “I know good silly fun when I see it.” \nThe series wraps up on April 22 with “The Pink Panther Strikes Again.” Peter Sellers reprises his role as the bumbling detective Inspector Clouseau. DESCRIPTION:The Windham Orchestra spotlights two musical geniuses in a special concert Sunday\, April 8\, at 3 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St. \nTwo profoundly different works — Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor\, Op. 15 by Brahms and Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony — are on the program. Brahms’ work opens the concert\, with Windham Orchestra Musical Director Hugh Keelan at the piano\, and Jessie Pierpont as guest conductor. Keelan describes the Piano Concerto as a work conjuring up “a single man staring down the universe\, a solo protagonist\, incredibly sure of himself.” \nIt is a dramatic\, powerful work\, says Keelan\, who points out that Brahms and his contemporaries were creating music in the colossal shadow cast by Beethoven. He notes\, in fact\, that Brahms’ First Symphony is often referred to as “Beethoven’s 10th.” \n The second piece performed\, Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony (Symphony No. 6)\, is as gentle as Brahms’ work is powerful\, and will take the audience on what Keelan calls “an emotional journey\, to a profound\, pastoral calm.” He adds\, “It is an absolutely extraordinary work\, not like anything else Beethoven created.” \nThe cost of admission is a donation of any amount. DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, April 6\, the world will finally have a chance to meet Lil’ Balzac\, a wannabe rapper willing to go the extra mile to realize his dreams of working with his favorite record producer. \nLil Balzac is the title character of a homegrown 30-minute absurdist comedy film shot in Brattleboro with a local cast and crew. It will have its first preview screening on April 6\, from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre\, a fitting place for the film’s debut. \n“Lil’ Balzac” was born in the imaginations of Latchis Theatre staff members Austin Rice and Alexander Passino. \n“Alex and I came up with the idea of Lil Balzac when we were both working at the Latchis Theatre. It’s cool that it started in the theater lobby and now it’s premiering in the Main Theatre\,” said Rice\, who is the film’s director\, co-writer and co-producer. \nThe April 6 event includes the debut showing of the film\, a Q&A with many of the people involved in it\, and a gag reel. Admission is by suggested donation of $5 – more is welcome – with proceeds going to support Rice’s next project. \nPassino stars as Lil Balzac\, a wannabe rapper who believes he just got his big break – the chance to work with his favorite producer. The trouble is\, he needs $4\,000 to pull it off\, and he’s actually just a dirt broke stoner living in a tent. Determined to realize his dream\, he jumps at the chance to raise the money by facing off  against an undefeated beast of a man in an underground fight club. What happens? Well\, you just have to see for yourself. \n“Lil Balzac” is the latest project for Rice\, who honed his filmmaking skills at The Compass School and River Valley Tech Center. He screened one of his earliest films\, “Noah\,” at the Latchis Theatre in 2011 when he was 17. Four years later\, he screened short comedic films during the Local Artists Showcase at the Latchis. He has also taught film at The Compass School and done videography and editing for several other local projects. \nTwo-and-a-half years in the making and filmed at many locations throughout Brattleboro\, “Lil Balzac” may have started as the brainchild of two friends and colleagues at the Latchis Theatre\, but it quickly grew to encompass the talents of many other local people. \nIn addition to Passino\, the cast includes Joshua Cunningham\, Jan Van Oene\, Maechyl Lloyd\, David Lloyd\, Teo Radev\, Darren Goldsmith\, Joel Kaemmerlen and Keely Eastley. Music is by Jan Van Oene\, Maechyl Lloyd and Evan Lincoln. Rice reached as far as Boston for help with animation by Steff Egan. \nThen there’s local filmmaker\, editor and videographer Angus Reid\, who was first pulled in as a last-minute substitute for a day of filming but became more and more involved\, eventually serving as director of photography\, visual and special effects director and\, ultimately\, co-producer. \n“I think it will surprise people as a highly entertaining\, watchable\, and sneakily impressive piece of work\,” said Reid. “Though I know that a stoner comedy about a total loser won’t be everyone’s cup of tea\, I do think it will find its audience\, and if it does\, what I would love to hear from them as they file out of the Latchis is: ‘Wow\, I can’t believe that was made here in Brattleboro.’” \nAfter the April 6 world premiere\, Rice is hoping to enter “Lil’ Balzac” in festivals\, and he’s hard at work on two screenplays. \nThe film is not rated\, but if it were\, it would probably carry a PG-13 tag for profanity and drug references. DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts’ Movies for Kids series continues in March on Sunday mornings – and one Saturday morning – at 11:30 a.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St. Admission is by donation. \nThe theme is Miyazaki in March\, and the focus for the month is on the brilliant animated films of Japanese director\, producer\, writer and artist Hayao Miyazaki. Over a career that spans more than five decades\, Miyazaki has won international acclaim as a masterful storyteller and animator. Film critic Roger Ebert has held Miyazaki up as a maybe the best animated filmmaker of all time. \nThe series concludes with a special Saturday showing on March 24\, at 11:30 a.m.\, featuring “The Cat Returns\,” a film by proteges of Miyazaki’s which shows his influence. This 2002 G-Rated film features a schoolgirl’s adventures with a very unusual feline. “This film has some of Miyazaki’s exquisite timing\, pacing and use of space\,” wrote Jeffrey Anderson of Combustible Celluloid. \nAdmission to all Miyazaki in March movies is by donations\, with proceeds benefitting the non-profit Latchis Arts. DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts’ Movies for Kids series continues in March on Sunday mornings – and one Saturday morning – at 11:30 a.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St. Admission is by donation. \nThe theme is Miyazaki in March\, and the focus for the month is on the brilliant animated films of Japanese director\, producer\, writer and artist Hayao Miyazaki. Over a career that spans more than five decades\, Miyazaki has won international acclaim as a masterful storyteller and animator. Film critic Roger Ebert has held Miyazaki up as a maybe the best animated filmmaker of all time. \nOn March 18\, Miyazaki in March features “Kiki’s Delivery Service\,” a G-rated masterpiece from 1989 about a young witch striking out on her own\, who makes her way by delivering the goods of a local baker by broom\, until something happens to change her plans. It has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics\, 88% from audiences. Top Critic Ken Eisner called it “Top-drawer kiddie fare for both fans of the exotic and mainstream family (audiences).” \nThe series concludes with a special Saturday showing on March 24\, at 11:30 a.m.\, featuring “The Cat Returns\,” a film by proteges of Miyazaki’s which shows his influence. This 2002 G-Rated film features a schoolgirl’s adventures with a very unusual feline. “This film has some of Miyazaki’s exquisite timing\, pacing and use of space\,” wrote Jeffrey Anderson of Combustible Celluloid. \nAdmission to all Miyazaki in March movies is by donations\, with proceeds benefitting the non-profit Latchis Arts. DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts’ Exhibition on Screen series continues with “Cézanne – Portraits of a Life” to be presented at the Latchis Theatre on Saturday and Sunday\, March 24 and 25\, at 5 p.m. \nThe Exhibition on Screen series is dedicated to bringing world class art and artists to cinemas. “Cézanne – Portraits of a Life” is based on an exhibition of Cézanne portraits at the National Portrait Gallery in London\, Musee d’Orsay in Paris and National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C. \nOver his life\, Cézanne painted almost 1\,000 paintings\, 200 of which were portraits. The exhibition\, billed by art critics as “once in a lifetime”\, brings together\, for the first time since Cézanne’s death\, 50 of these portraits from private and public collections all around the world. \nThese portraits provide the backbone of a moving\, new cinematic look at Cézanne’s life. In addition to offering an unprecedented level of insight into the exhibition\, the film also features interviews with curators\, art experts and the artist’s great-grandson Philippe Cézanne. The film travels to Cézanne’s home and studio in Provence and includes correspondence from the artist\, shedding new light on the life and work of this hugely influential artist. \nThe March 24 screening will be presented in the Latchis Main Theatre; due to prior commitments\, the screening on March 25 will not. “Cézanne: Portraits of a Life” will also be presented at the Latchis Theatre on Saturday and Sunday\, April 21 and 22\, at 4 p.m. Running time is approximately 90 minutes. \nAdmission to “Cézanne – Portraits of a Life” are $12 general admission\, $6 for students available at the door.
