DESCRIPTION:The In-Sight Photography Project brings the award-winning climate change film “Chasing Ice” to the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St.\, Brattleboro\, on Sunday\, Sept. 24\, at 4 p.m. The presentation is the third in In-Sight’s film series “Great Pictures.” \nThe highly acclaimed film tells the story of a team of photographers that captured the first visual evidence of climate change through time-lapse photography of disappearing glaciers. The film runs 75 minutes and is rated PG-13. \nChasing Ice was filmed in Alaska\, Bolivia\, Canada\, Denmark\, Greenland and Iceland and has won many awards\, including for Excellence in Cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival and Best Adventure Film at the Boulder International Film Festival. \nThe film\, which showcases the ingenious time-lapse photography of award-winning natural environment photographer and author of ICE: Portraits of Vanishing Glaciers\, James Balog was produced and directed by cinematographer Jeff Orlowski\, whose work has been shown on the National Geographic Channel\, CNN\, NBC\, and has been featured in The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, Time\, Popular Mechanics and on NPR. \nIn-Sight asks for a donation at the door of $10 with a suggested student donation of $5. SUMMARY:Latchis Arts Salutes Jerry Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts salutes the life and comedic legacy of the late\, great Jerry Lewis with screenings of two films representing different aspects and eras of his career. \nOn Saturday\, September 16\, at 4 p.m. Latchis Arts will present “The King of Comedy\,” the dark 1982 film which in many ways marked Lewis’ comeback after a period of setbacks. On Sunday\, September 17\, at 4 p.m.\, we will show “The Bellhop\,” a hilarious\, 1960 slapstick comedy that shows Lewis at the height of his powers. Admission to both films will be by donation\, and proceeds will be shared between Latchis Arts and the Muscular Dystrophy Association\, the cause which Lewis poured his heart and soul into for decades\, ultimately raising more than $2 billion through telethons and other efforts. \nDirected by Martin Scorsese\, “The King of Comedy” stars Robert DeNiro as an inspiring comedian who strives to achieve success in show business by stalking his idol\, a late night talk show host played by Lewis. Earning mixed reviews at the time of its release\, the film has grown in stature and relevance. Philip Horne of the UK Daily Telegraph called it “a disturbing picture of a world in which television is taken for a ‘reality’ higher than everyday life.” Matt Brunson of Creative Loafing said\, “this jet black comedy is a symphony of unease.” \nThough known to millions thanks to the annual Labor Day Weekend telethons for the Muscular Dystrophy Association\, Lewis was in a personal and professional slump at the time “The King of Comedy” was released. The success of the film restored his stature\, and Lewis was praised for the depth and brilliance of his acting\, not for the comic pratfalls for which he was known. \nBy contrast\, “The Bellhop” is 100% pure\, unadulterated slapstick. In this 1960 comedy\, which marked his debut as a director\, writer and producer\, as well as actor\, Lewis plays a mistake-prone bellboy at a posh Miami hotel. He speaks no dialogue as he careens through a silly stream of scenarios. \nCritics have hailed “The Bellhop” as “nothing less than a masterpiece” and “one of the funniest all-time comedies” and “Jerry at his rawest and most creative.” \nIn his life\, Lewis was a complex and polarizing figure who could be as contemptuous and cantankerous and he was beloved and brilliant. With his death on August 20\, at the age of 91\, Latchis Arts will honor the talented performer he was through the screenings of these two films and through sharing the proceeds with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. DESCRIPTION:Nationally-renowned singer/songwriter and Indigenous Rights Activist Lyla June Johnston\, of Taos\, New Mexico\, will headline Brattleboro’s new Fantastic Wantastiquet Festival in a gala keynote gathering at the Latchis Theatre at 2 p.m.\, on Saturday\, September 16. \n“Lyla June’s presence here heralds a call to people of all Nations\, particularly First Nation/Indigenous peoples\, to converge on the Wantastiquet region\,” said John Wilmerding\, Festival organizer. \nWilmerding first conceived of Fantastic Wantastiquet in 2015 as a plan to bring the area’s arts and cultural offerings under one marketing banner. “I knew it would elevate and transform us and enhance our relationship with these lands\,” he said. The name of the Festival in effect recovers and re-claims the original name of the West River — ‘Wantastiquet’ – which translates as ‘River leading to the West.’ \nThe performance dovetails with a successful effort to have the Town of Brattleboro observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day this year instead of Columbus Day. \n“This has deepened the Festival’s emphasis on these peoples and lands\,” he said. “It’s enabled us to choose new themes and content for the Festival. However\, we are not organizing the Indigenous Peoples Day events. Those are being created by indigenous folks who live locally.” \nThe official themes announced for this first year of Fantastic Wantastiquet are ‘Celebrating People and Place’\, the local rivers (especially Wantastiquet and Connecticut)\, the ‘Fall Foliage’ and the other natural beauty found in our area\, and ‘The Better Angels of Our Nature’\, which is a quote from Abraham Lincoln’s first inaugural address. \n“Lyla June\, however\, carries her own themes with her\, especially the central theme of her most popular song\, ‘All Nations Rise’”\, said Wilmerding. The performing artist was responsible for helping indigenous and other peoples to rally last year near Standing Rock\, ND\, to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline\, and also at a subsequent Unity Rally near the Black Hills of South Dakota. Other special guests will be present\, many of them traveling from afar\, as excitement in Brattleboro grows for our first Indigenous Peoples Day activities in early October. \nThe Latchis program\, planned for 2:00 on Saturday\, September 16\, will be ‘admission-by-donation’ with a suggested amount of $10 but a ‘no one turned away’ policy as well. DESCRIPTION:WKVT and Latchis Arts will hold the 7th annual “Load the Latchis” food drive Thursday\, August 10. \nFrom 6:00am to 6:00pm\, volunteers will be on Flat Street outside the Latchis Building for curbside drop-off of food and monetary donations\, which help stock the Groundworks Collaborative food shelf. \nLast year’s event placed a full bag of groceries on each of the 750 seats inside the main theater of the Latchis and raised more than $2\,000. DESCRIPTION:Guilford filmmaker John Scagliotti will present the Vermont Premiere Screening of Before Homosexuals: The Prequel to Before Stonewall on Saturday\, July 22\, at 4 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre. After the screening\, he will be joined by members of the crew for a lively Q&A session. The event is presented by the Brattleboro Film Festival. Tickets are available online at www.beforehomosexuals.com/screenings. \nWhile Scagliotti was news director at WBCN Boston in 1975\, he was arrested by the vice squad and charged with “soliciting to commit unnatural and lascivious acts.” A jury dressed in festive St. Patrick’s Day attire quickly brought a verdict: guilty as charged. Scagliotti fought that conviction all the way to the Supreme Court of Massachusetts\, and with the help of the ACLU\, the initial ruling was overturned. It was a landmark decision for gays and lesbians\, and for personal freedom. \nIn his latest film\, Before Homosexuals: The Prequel to Before Stonewall\, Scagliotti brings the Boston arrest full-circle while ruminating on a bit of ancient graffiti on the Greek island of Astypalaia at the start of the film. Standing over this affirmation of same-sex love etched in stone some 2\,500 years ago\, he ponders the naturalness of homosexuality among the ancient Greeks\, in contrast to his arrest and conviction in the US in 1975. \nPresented by the Brattleboro Film Festival and benefiting local non-profit Kopkind’s CineSLAM LGBT Short Film Festival\, the film takes viewers on a tour of erotic history\, poetry and visual art expressing same-sex desire from ancient times to Victorian crimes. It is a searching\, thoughtful\, humorously edgy point-of-view documentary\, in which Scagliotti (who received an Emmy Award as a producer of Before Stonewall) explores how the sexual revolution of the 1960s and the growth of LGBT political power in the decades that followed cleared the path for artists and scholars to re-discover the pre-20th century history of same-sex desire. \nThis film was produced in association with Boston’s Center for Independent Documentary; major funding was provided by LEF Foundation\, located in Cambridge.

Admission is by suggested donation of $10. \nSchulman works at The New Yorker\, where he is the theater editor of Goings On About Town and a frequent contributor to The Talk of the Town. His first book\, “Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep\,” came out last year and was a New York Times best-seller. Who was this ambitious and passionate man? A virtuoso craftsman\, Michelangelo’s artistry is evident in everything he touched. SUMMARY:Ukelele Jam
DESCRIPTION:Brattleboro area ukulele players are invited to six open jams to be held the first and third Mondays in March\, April and May from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Latchis 4 Gallery on Main Street.  The remaining dates are May 1 and 15. Come to one jam or all six. \nThe jams are an outgrowth of the lessons\, salons and flash mobs led by instructor and singer-songwriter Lisa McCormick\, in response to a groundswell of enthusiasm by players interested in continuing to play together.  All players are welcome\, whether or not you’ve participated in the local groups. Players are encouraged to bring music stands and song books\, and copies of new songs to share.  Due to the generous sponsorship of Latchis Arts\, the jams are free of charge. \nFor more information contact Gail Nunziata at gnunziata@comcast.net.

DESCRIPTION:The Brattleboro School of Dance presents its third annual Recital on Sunday\, April 30\, at 3 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St.\, Brattleboro. \nFor the third year\, Brattleboro School of Dance is presenting an informal showing of the work of students in classes at BSD. This show features younger performers and classes of styles other than ballet and modern dance\, which are featured at BSD’s Spring Dance Concert by more advanced dancers. BSD is again teaming up with the West Bee Nursery School Singers to provide a selection of singing and dancing that’s fun for the whole family. \nTickets are $10. SUMMARY:Major!
DESCRIPTION:Green Mountain Crossroads presents a free community screening of the film “Major!” on Saturday\, April 29\, at 4 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre. \n“Major!” is the story of one woman’s journey\, a community’s history\, and how caring for each other can be a revolutionary act. \nThe film follows the life and campaigns of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy\, a 73-year-old black transgender woman who has been fighting for the rights of trans women of color for over 40 years. \nThis is the first screening of “Major!” in Vermont. Through the “Major to the People” program\, Green Mountain Crossroads is able to offer free admission to the film. Green Mountain Crossroads will also collecting donations to be shared with Miss Major’s Circle of Care\, as well as local groups\, including Green Mountain Crossroads and The Root Social Justice Center (therootsjc.org). \nThe screening is brought to audiences through a collaboration between Green Mountain Crossroads and Lost River Racial Justice\, as part of LRRJ’s racial justice film series. \nFor more information\, visit greenmountaincrossroads.org. DESCRIPTION:National Theatre Live simulcasts continue at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St.\, Brattleboro\, this Sunday\, April 23\, at 1 p.m.\, with William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” \nSimon Godwin (NT Live: Man and Superman\, NT Live: The Beaux’ Stratagem) directs this joyous new production with Tamsin Greig (Friday Night Dinner\, Black Books\, Episodes) as a transformed Malvolia\, and an ensemble cast that includes Daniel Rigby (Flowers\, Jericho)\, Tamara Lawrence (Undercover)\, Doon Mackichan (Smack the Pony) and Daniel Ezra (The Missing\, Undercover). This production\, with a vibrant\, modern set that even features a Jacuzzi on stage\, was a big hit at the National Theatre.
