SUMMARY:To Live: Films by Putney School students from China
DESCRIPTION:The Latchis Theatre is proud to host “To Live\,” an evening of short films by four Chinese students at The Putney School who are members of the award-winning ET8 Studio\, on Friday\, Jan. 31\, at 7 p.m. \nThe evening will feature five short feature films (mostly 2 to 4 minutes\, with one 13-minute documentary) by four student members of ET8 Studios at The Putney School – Shangyou Li\, Xiuyuan Chen\, Shixue Shao and Zirui Liu. There will be an opportunity for conversation after the screenings\, and the filmmakers will have merchandise for sale. \nAdmission is by suggested donation of $8. \nIn the spring of 2018\, three teens from China established ET8 Studio at The Putney School out of a shared passion for cinematic art and an ambition to reshape the Western world’s image of China. \n“After coming to the U.S.\, we found that even in the era of the Internet\, the Western and Eastern worlds still hold numerous biased and inaccurate perceptions toward each other. As international students and new generation artists\, we feel obliged to address this problem and bridge this gap. Our current mission is to present Chinese culture\, values and social issues through the form of film\, from which audiences around the globe can appreciate the beauty of China and understand the challenges it faces.” \nET8 Studio films have won awards\, including First Place in the 2019 Vermont Freedom and Unity Film Contest\, and being named Official Selections of the Indie Short Festival and the Wasteland Film Festival.

SUMMARY:The Great Composers: In Search of Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts launches a new film series\, The Great Composers\, featuring four films on the world’s most influential composers\, starting with “In Search of Beethoven” on Saturday and Sunday\, January 25 and 26\, at 4 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre. \nDeveloped by Seventh Art Productions\, who also produce the popular Exhibition on Screen series\, The Great Composers series celebrates the lives and art of four exceptional musicians and individuals – Beethoven\, Mozart\, Chopin and Haydn. \nWritten and directed by Phil Grabsky and narrated by Juliet Stevenson\, the films explore each musician in phenomenal depth\, including readings of their own letters and the insights of respected historians and musicologists. Each film is accompanied by breathtaking performances of the composers’ work brought to life by the world’s leading orchestras and musicians such as Emanuel Ax\, Daniel Barenboim\, Leif Ove Andsnes\, Janine Jansen\, Lars Vogt\, Jonathan Miller\, Ronald Brautigam\, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the 18th Century. \n“In Search of Beethoven” addresses the romantic myth that Beethoven was a heroic\, tormented figure\, battling to overcome his tragic fate of deafness and who searched for his “immortal beloved” but remained unmarried. It delves beyond the image of the tortured\, bad-tempered\, unhinged personality to reveal someone quite different and far more interesting.  The film has been called the best film ever made on Beethoven and is the choice of the Beethoven Haus (Beethoven’s birthplace) as the “go to” film on Beethoven. \nThe Great Composers series continues on February 15 and 16\, at 4 p.m. with “In Search of Mozart\,” followed on April 4 and 5 at 4 p.m.\, by “In Search of Chopin” and “In Search of Haydn” on April 18 and 19\, at 4 p.m. \nAdmission to The Great Composers series films is $12\, $6 for students\, and tickets are available at the door. For more information\, visit latchisars.org or contact Jon Potter at jon@latchisarts.org or 802-254-1109\, ext. 3.

The piece is a setting of a haunting Church Slavonic text by Russian Eastern Orthodox monk Saint Silouan. It is a stark exploration of the biblical Adam’s grief and pain at being cast out of Eden\, and then seeing his son\, Abel\, murdered by his other son\, Cain.  From that “Fall\,” the program proceeds to a “Rise” from the afterlife. Contemporary Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo’s 2017 piece Dreamweaver is an English retelling of a medieval Norwegian epic poem. \n

SUMMARY:National Theatre Live in HD: 'Hansard'
DESCRIPTION:The series of screenings of the National Theatre: Live in HD presentations at the Latchis Theatre continues with “Hansard” on Sunday\, Jan. 12\, at 4 p.m. \nSee Olivier Award-winners Lindsay Duncan (Birdman\, About Time) and Alex Jennings (The Lady in the Van\, The Queen)\, in this brand new play from Simon Woods that’s been hailed as “Engrossing and incisive” and “deliciously witty.” \nIt’s a summer’s morning in 1988 and Tory politician Robin Hesketh has returned home to the idyllic Cotswold house he shares with his wife of 30 years\, Diana. But all is not as blissful as it seems. Diana has a stinking hangover\, a fox is destroying the garden\, and secrets are being dug up all over the place. As the day draws on\, what starts as gentle ribbing and the familiar rhythms of marital scrapping quickly turns to blood-sport. \nDon’t miss this witty and devastating portrait of the governing class\, directed by Simon Godwin (NT Live: Antony & Cleopatra\, Twelfth Night). \n“Hansard” runs 1 hour and 25 minutes\, with no intermission. \n.Tickets for “Hansard” are $20 for general admission\, $10 for students. SUMMARY:Darth Wagner: Insights into the Music of Star Wars
DESCRIPTION:In a program for film buffs\, music lovers and anyone with an interest in pop culture sources and references\, Latchis Arts welcomes maestro Hugh Keelan for a presentation called “Darth Wagner: Insights into the Music of Star Wars” on Sunday\, Jan. 12\, at 1 p.m. in the Latchis Main Theatre. \nArmed with a piano instead of a light saber\, Keelan will examine the influence of 19th century German composer Richard Wagner on John Williams’ music for the Star Wars films\, particularly in Williams’ use of leitmotifs – or specific musical themes associated with particular characters\, objects\, locations\, ideas or situations. \nKeelan is not alone is showing that the iconic music of “Star Wars” has roots in Wagner. In January 2018\, New Yorker music critic Alex Ross wrote an article titled A Field Guide to the Musical Leitmotifs of “Star Wars”\, in which he cited musical scholars who had identified more than 50 leitmotifs in the “Star Wars soundtracks. Williams himself has cited Wagner as an influence\, particularly in his composing for “Star Wars.” \nKeelan is music director of TUNDI Productions\, which presented a critically acclaimed production of “Tristan und Isolde” in August 2019. TUNDI has ambitious plans to present Wagner in Vermont again in August 2020. \nAdmission to “Darth Wagner” is $15\, which also includes admission to see “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” at the Latchis Theatre immediately following Keelan’s half-hour presentation. Admission to the talk only is $7. Proceeds from Keelan’s presentation benefit TUNDI Productions. \n

Viewers will marvel at masterpieces such as “The Last Supper\,” “Lady with an Ermine\,” “Ginevra de’ Benci\,” “Madonaa Litta\,” “Virgin of the Rocks” and the “Mona Lisa.” \n“Leonardo: The Works” also looks afresh at Leonardo’s life through the prism of his art\, threading biography and artistic output together\, with the assistance of the world’s foremost curators\, critics and historians. \nWriter and director Phil Grabsky traveled to eight countries to film virtually all attributed Leonardo works. The film includes the much-discussed ‘Salvator Mundi\,” which the filmmakers believe is a Leonardo work\, the recently restored “Adoration of the Magi” and\, shown for the first time since its conservation\, the “Lansdowne Madonna.” It also offers privileged access to the “Mona Lisa.”

SUMMARY:Vermont Folk Horror Film Roadshow
DESCRIPTION:Join the Vermont International Film Foundation (VTIFF) and the Vermont Folklife Center (VT Folklife) for the Vermont Folk Horror Roadshow\, bringing Transformations (1972) and Walter Ungerer’s The Animal—two eerie films shot and set in Vermont—to the Latchis Theatre on Saturday\, Oct. 26\, at 4 p.m. \nFilm historian\, horror authority and cartoonist Stephen R. Bissette will introduce the films and lead a question-and-answer session. This event is free and open to all. A $10 suggested donation is welcome. \nThe term folk horror describes films that draw elements of folklore into the conventions of horror cinema. The phrase is often used in reference to British films that explore rural landscape\, paganism and witchcraft and sources of fear. The Vermont Folk Horror Roadshow emerged through pondering the question: is there such a thing as Vermont folk horror? \nIn search of an answer\, folklorist and VT Folklife Center Associate Director Andy Kolovos turned to the collection of Vermont-made films preserved by the Vermont Archive Movie Project (VAMP)\, a VTIFF program. Kolovos was already familiar with the short film Transformations\, preserved by VAMP in 2015. “More than anything else\, Transformations is a celebration of the 70s women’s movement and the importance neo-pagan spirituality within it\,” said Kolovos. “At the same time\, it is filled with night fires\, music\, and ritual\, and permeated by the presence of hidden power—it soundly fits the folk horror bill.” \nKolovos and VTIFF executive director Orly Yadin then began to explore the idea of staging a Vermont folk horror film tour for Halloween. The pair reached out to Bissette for his thoughts on other Vermont films that could fit the folk horror bill. Bissette’s answer was immediate and brief: “Walter Ungerer’s The Animal.” Preserved by VAMP in 2017\, Ungerer’s haunting\, avant garde film\, The Animal highlights rural isolation and the winter landscape as sites of loss and terror. \nThe Vermont Folk Horror Roadshow is a partnership between the Vermont International Film Foundation\, Vermont Folklife Center\, Highland Center for the Arts\, Latchis Arts\, Pentangle Arts\, Savoy Theater and White River Indie Films. Details on each event available at vtfolklife.org/folkhorror. \nThe Vermont Folklife Center’s mission is to broaden\, strengthen\, and deepen our understanding of Vermont; to assure a repository for our collective cultural memory; and to build connections among the diverse peoples of Vermont.
