SUMMARY:Darth Wagner: Insights into the Music of Star Wars
DESCRIPTION:In a program for film buffs\, music lovers and anyone with an interest in pop culture sources and references\, Latchis Arts welcomes maestro Hugh Keelan for a presentation called “Darth Wagner: Insights into the Music of Star Wars” on Sunday\, Jan. 12\, at 1 p.m. in the Latchis Main Theatre. \nArmed with a piano instead of a light saber\, Keelan will examine the influence of 19th century German composer Richard Wagner on John Williams’ music for the Star Wars films\, particularly in Williams’ use of leitmotifs – or specific musical themes associated with particular characters\, objects\, locations\, ideas or situations. \nKeelan is not alone is showing that the iconic music of “Star Wars” has roots in Wagner. In January 2018\, New Yorker music critic Alex Ross wrote an article titled A Field Guide to the Musical Leitmotifs of “Star Wars”\, in which he cited musical scholars who had identified more than 50 leitmotifs in the “Star Wars soundtracks. Williams himself has cited Wagner as an influence\, particularly in his composing for “Star Wars.” \nKeelan is music director of TUNDI Productions\, which presented a critically acclaimed production of “Tristan und Isolde” in August 2019. TUNDI has ambitious plans to present Wagner in Vermont again in August 2020. \nAdmission to “Darth Wagner” is $15\, which also includes admission to see “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” at the Latchis Theatre immediately following Keelan’s half-hour presentation. Admission to the talk only is $7. Proceeds from Keelan’s presentation benefit TUNDI Productions. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join the Vermont International Film Foundation (VTIFF) and the Vermont Folklife Center (VT Folklife) for the Vermont Folk Horror Roadshow\, bringing Transformations (1972) and Walter Ungerer’s The Animal—two eerie films shot and set in Vermont—to the Latchis Theatre on Saturday\, Oct. 26\, at 4 p.m. \nFilm historian\, horror authority and cartoonist Stephen R. Bissette will introduce the films and lead a question-and-answer session. This event is free and open to all. A $10 suggested donation is welcome. \nThe term folk horror describes films that draw elements of folklore into the conventions of horror cinema. The phrase is often used in reference to British films that explore rural landscape\, paganism and witchcraft and sources of fear. The Vermont Folk Horror Roadshow emerged through pondering the question: is there such a thing as Vermont folk horror? \nIn search of an answer\, folklorist and VT Folklife Center Associate Director Andy Kolovos turned to the collection of Vermont-made films preserved by the Vermont Archive Movie Project (VAMP)\, a VTIFF program. Kolovos was already familiar with the short film Transformations\, preserved by VAMP in 2015. “More than anything else\, Transformations is a celebration of the 70s women’s movement and the importance neo-pagan spirituality within it\,” said Kolovos. “At the same time\, it is filled with night fires\, music\, and ritual\, and permeated by the presence of hidden power—it soundly fits the folk horror bill.” \nKolovos and VTIFF executive director Orly Yadin then began to explore the idea of staging a Vermont folk horror film tour for Halloween. The pair reached out to Bissette for his thoughts on other Vermont films that could fit the folk horror bill. Bissette’s answer was immediate and brief: “Walter Ungerer’s The Animal.” Preserved by VAMP in 2017\, Ungerer’s haunting\, avant garde film\, The Animal highlights rural isolation and the winter landscape as sites of loss and terror. \nThe Vermont Folk Horror Roadshow is a partnership between the Vermont International Film Foundation\, Vermont Folklife Center\, Highland Center for the Arts\, Latchis Arts\, Pentangle Arts\, Savoy Theater and White River Indie Films. DESCRIPTION:Vermont PBS presents a free preview screening of the latest documentary by Ken Burns\, “Country Music\,” followed by a discussion with country music musicians Jamie Lee Thurston\, Flynn Cohen and Chris Brashear at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St.\, on Thursday\, Sept. 12\, from 7 to 9 p.m. \n“Country Music” is a 16-hour series exploring the history of a uniquely American art form. From its deep and tangled roots in ballads\, blues and hymns performed in small settings\, to its worldwide popularity\, learn how country music evolved over the course of the 20th century. “Country Music” features never-before-seen footage and photographs\, plus interviews with more than 80 country music artists.
