DESCRIPTION:Turning Point and the Latchis Theatre invite you to “A Beautiful Journey” – a night of storytelling on Thursday\, October 3\, at 7 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro. \nFive people in recovery from substance-use disorder will share their personal stories\, from the time before they used substances\, to the time when substance use consumed their lives\, and\, finally\, to the time when they found recovery through hope and connection with their communities. \nThis event launches Turning Point’s storytelling series “A Beautiful Journey\,” giving community members the chance to hear firsthand from people who experienced the heartache and turmoil substance use can cause. These people who have found recovery will tell us that substance-use disorder is not a choice; it is a brain disease that impacts the lives of too many in our community. At the end of the storytelling\, guests who wish to\, may stay for a question and answer session. \nDoors open at 6p.m.\, and the event starts promptly at 7 p.m. These stories are authentic and compelling–and inspiring! DESCRIPTION:CineSLAM returns to the Latchis Theatre in downtown Brattleboro with a Pride Film Festival of Shorts on Friday\, June 28\, at 6 pm. \nCineSLAM is Vermont’s first LGBTQ film festival\, and this will be its 13th annual presentation in Brattleboro. The event is sponsored by the Kopkind Colony\, which was founded 20 years ago in memory of celebrated political journalist Andrew Kopkind\, \nThe festival this year\, says program director John Scagliotti\, honors all those who took to the streets in 1969 and launched the modern gay movement: “The 50th  anniversary of Stonewall is attracting the biggest gay crowds ever assembled in the history of the world to celebrate the accomplishments of LGBTQ people over the past five decades. Here in Brattleboro we will be part of those celebrations with our Pride Festival on the actual day of the riots.” \nLeading off the festival will be Cheryl Fujanic’s just released film Stonewall: The Making of a Monument. Ever since the riots in the streets outside New York City’s Stonewall bar fifty years ago\, people from the queer community have gathered in that spot to express their joy\, their anger\, their pain and their power. Three years ago the site was designated by the Obama Administration as a National Monument. The film was a New York Times Op-Docs film. \nIn recognition of movement pioneers\, CineSLAM will also present Steven F. Dansky’s film From Trauma to Activism. An activist\, writer and photographer for more than 50 years\, now a documentary filmmaker\, Dansky unpacks LGBTQ history with narratives from audacious pathfinders and gay liberationists; dykes and lesbian separatists; radical fairies and queens. \nRounding out our tribute to the past\, Scagliotti and Christopher Dawes have curated a selection of film excerpts from the After Stonewall Productions archive. They call it “The Stonewall Riots were BIG\, but what happened afterward was MONUMENTAL!.” \nThis festival is no simple ode to the past\, for the fight against discrimination that exploded 50 years ago continues. In the wake of the Trump administration’s ban against transgender people serving in the military\, CineSLAM will screen Fiona Dawson’s film Transgender at War and in Love. \nThe Kopkind Colony is a seminar/retreat project for political journalists\, activists and documentary filmmakers. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 11\, opera fans will have a rare opportunity to experience a Met: Live in HD performance on Francis Poulenc’s “The Dialogues of the Carmelites\, at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St.\, at noon. \nCreated in 1955 and based on historical fact\, some background may be helpful: \n“Today\, 40 individuals had their heads cut off\, including 16 Carmelite nuns from Compiegne.” \nThis statement\, dated July 17\, 1794\, from the diary of 69-year-old Celestin Guittard de Floriban\, an avid of public guillotining\, tells us that the opera was inspired by real events. The French Revolution was relentlessly harsh toward contemplative religious orders – Voltaire made the dismissive remark that “They eat\, they pray\, they digest.” \nIn 1792-3\, the monarchy was toppled and the ensuing National Assembly responded by adopting a policy of terror. The Carmelites of Compiegne were convicted of counter-revolutionary offenses\, and\, after a perfunctory trial\, sentenced to death. The sisters went sequentially to their deaths singing the Laudate Dominum. When only a single voice was heard after 15 beheadings\, silence fell. \nMusic director Yannick Nezet-Segiun concludes his first season at the helm. Isabel Leonard and Adrienne Pieczonka sing the leading roles of Blanche de la Force and the new Prioress\, Madame Liodine. Karita Mattila portrays the ailing first prioress Madame de Criossy. The cast also includes Karen Cargill as Mother Marie\, Erin Morley in the role of Sister Constance\, David Portillo as Blanche’s brother\, the Chevalier de la Force\, and Jean-Francois Lapointe in his Met debut as the Marquis de la Force. \nRenee Fleming is the Live in HD host. DESCRIPTION:Tickets are available here: LatchisBluesTix\nThe Vermont Arts Council and Latchis Arts are joining forces to present a Mud Season Blues Benefit Concert featuring Bob Stannard & Those Dangerous Bluesmen on Friday\, April 12\, at 7:30 p.m. \nStannard and his band play straight-up blues from the likes of Howling Wolf\, Sonny Boy Williamson II\, James Cotton\, Little Walter and Paul Butterfield. \n“We are excited that the Dangerous Bluesmen are coming together to put on a great show and support the arts\,” said Karen Mittelman\, executive director of the Vermont Arts Council. “The funds from this concert will provide critical support for artists in the Brattleboro area and throughout Vermont.” \nProceeds from the concert will be shared between the Vermont Arts Council and Latchis Arts. \n“We do a few slow tunes\, but the overwhelming majority of music we play is designed to get you out of your seats\, on your feet and dancing like it’s your last day on earth\,” said Stannard. \nStannard is an eighth generation Vermonter who’s been playing and singing the blues since 1969\, when he quit playing the drums and taught himself the harmonica. Since then\, he’s opened for or played with a slew of top musicians\, including Big Joe Burrell\, Sandra Wright\, John Hammond\, Chris Smither\, Maria Muldaur\, The Fabulous Thunderbirds\, Lynard Skynard\, Buddy Guy\, Susan Tedeschi\, Isaac Hayes\, David “Honey Boy” Edwards\, and his idol\, Charlie Musselwhite. Stannard joined BB King on stage at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Montreaux\, Switzerland\, and has even jammed with acclaimed author Stephen King. \nStannard will be joined on the Latchis stage by Those Dangerous Bluesmen\, a quintet of top-notch musicians with impressive credits. They include: Jeff Salisbury (drums/vocals)\, who has played with Albert King and fronts his own band; Kenny B (bass)\, who has been on the road for 18 years with Muddy Waters Band guitarist Luther “Guitar Jr.” Johnson; Brad Morgan (keyboard/vocals)\, who has played with Satin & Steele for more than 35 years; Joe Moore (sax/vocals)\, who played with the Isley Brothers and Wilson Pickett and fronts his own band; and John Falk (guitar/vocals) who has played around Vermont for many years and should be in the Blues Hall of Fame. \nWhen he’s not playing and recording the blues\, Stannard is a proud husband\, father and grandpa\, an author and an advocate for the arts. DESCRIPTION:After a three-year hiatus\, The Hatch will present its seventh Storytellers on a Mission event featuring nationally renowned storytellers who will tell moving and hilarious stories to raise money for a great cause. The event will be held on Saturday\, March 30\, at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro. The evening’s event will be hosted by comedian and actor Jordan Carlos and will include storytellers Tara Clancy\, Jon Glaser\, Jodi Lennon and Adam Burke. \nThe upcoming Storytellers on a Mission will benefit Groundworks Collaborative\, a nonprofit organization that merged the Brattleboro Area Drop-In Center and Morningside Shelter in 2015. They provide ongoing support and services to families and individuals facing housing and food insecurities in the greater Brattleboro\, Vermont area. \nEvent organizers The Hatch launched in 2013 to produce entertaining storytelling events for the community and donate the proceeds to nonprofit organizations in Vermont. Club and on-line for New York Magazine.  His first book\, My Dead Dad Was In ZZ Top\, was published by Harper Perennial\, and he wrote and directed the music video for Bob Mould’s “Star Machine.” \nWriter\, producer and director Jodi Lennon has a vast performance background including Chicago’s Second Theatre\, The Annoyance Theatre and NYC’s UCB Theater. She now writes and produces various television projects. Lennon has written for Hulu’s Difficult People and Funny or Die’s Billy On The Street. DESCRIPTION:In an evening devoted to gardens and gratitude\, Latchis Arts presents a special screening of the film “Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf” on Saturday\, March 23\, at 4 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St. \nHailed as a film that “makes lovely visual music\,” “Five Seasons” is stunningly beautiful and worth seeing in its own right. The March 23 screening has special meaning as an opportunity to express thanks to Gordon Hayward\, the noted garden designer and author\, who served for nine years on the board of Latchis Arts\, including four as its president. Hayward selected “Five Seasons” as a film he wished to be shown at the Latchis. \nAfter completing a feature documentary on New York City’s High Line\, award-winning filmmaker Thomas Piper met the inspirational landscape designer Piet Oudolf. “Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf” immerses viewers in Oudolf’s work and takes us inside his creative process\, from his beautifully abstract sketches\, to theories on beauty\, to the ecological implications of his ideas. \nIntimate discussions take place through all four seasons in Oudolf’s own gardens and on visits to his signature public works in New York\, where he designed The High Line\, Chicago and The Netherlands\, as well as far-flung locations that inspire his genius. The film also follows Oudolf as he designs and installs a major new garden at Hauser & Wirth Somerset\, a gallery and arts center in Southwest England\, a garden he considers his best work yet. \nPiet Oudolf has radically refined what gardens can be. As the botanist Rich Darke says in the film\, “your work teaches us to see what we have been unable to see.” Throughout poetic cinematography and unique access\, “Five Seasons” reveals all that Piet sees and celebrates all that we\, as viewers\, have been unable to see. \nEast Bay Times hailed “Five Seasons” as a film “anyone who relishes time in a garden will understand and cherish.” The Chicago Tribune said it “makes lovely visual music.” “Those with a green thumb will be delighted to discover new ways to think about their gardens\,” added the Santa Fe New Mexican. \n“Five Seasons” is produced by Argot Pictures\, and its running time is 74 minutes. \n“Five Seasons” will be shown in the Main Theatre at the Latchis. Meanwhile\, ambitious politicians and the scheming Prince of Wales begin a power struggle\, endangering the stability of the crown. \nThe cast stars Mark Gatiss (known for his roles in Sherlock\, Game of Thrones\, The League of Gentlemen and Doctor Who) as King George III\, Adrian Scarborough as Doctor Willis and Debra Gillett as Queen Charlotte.
