SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen: Van Gogh & Japan
DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts’ popular Exhibition on Screen series returns on Saturday and Sunday Aug. 17 and 18\, at 4 p.m.\, with “Van Gogh & Japan” at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St. \nA pioneering series of cinematic films about exhibitions\, galleries and artists\, Exhibition on Screen sheds light on a surprising and little-known aspect of the work of Vincent van Gogh. Taking its inspiration from the critically acclaimed exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum\, the film reveals the fascinating story of Van Gogh’s deep connection to Japanese art and the role it has in understanding his most iconic works. \nFeaturing excerpts from Van Gogh’s personal letters and written accounts by friends and contemporaries\, this film investigates the expression of Van Gogh’s “Japonisme” and explores how people in Japan have developed an affinity to Van Gogh’s work as a result of his engagement with their culture. \nFeaturing insights from contemporary artists\, including calligrapher Tomoko Kawao and performance artist Tatsumi Orimoto\, “Van Gogh & Japan” provides revealing and modern perspectives on the rich\, symbiotic relationship between Van Gogh and Japan. \n“The brilliant thing about working on a film about Van Gogh is the richness of insight one can gain from his letters and just looking closely at his artworks\,” said director David Bickerstaff. “You think you know them – they are famous\, but with every viewing they reveal something new. The intensity of his fragile mind as he struggles with his art is laid bare with every mark he makes. It is the pursuit of a powerful simplicity that attracted Vincent van Gogh to the art of Japan\, and the Japanese to his story.” \nThe film runs 90 minutes. Admission for “Van Gogh & Japan” is $12\, $6 for students\, at the door. Proceeds benefit Latchis Arts. For information\, visit www.latchisarts.org. Information about the 1919-20 season of Exhibition on Screen offerings\, as well as an announcement about a new series of films by Seventh-Art\, the producers of Exhibition on Screen\, will be available on Aug. 17 and 18.

SUMMARY:CineSLAM - Pride Film Festival of Shorts
DESCRIPTION:CineSLAM returns to the Latchis Theatre in downtown Brattleboro with a Pride Film Festival of Shorts on Friday\, June 28\, at 6 pm. \nCineSLAM is Vermont’s first LGBTQ film festival\, and this will be its 13th annual presentation in Brattleboro. The event is sponsored by the Kopkind Colony\, which was founded 20 years ago in memory of celebrated political journalist Andrew Kopkind\, \nThe festival this year\, says program director John Scagliotti\, honors all those who took to the streets in 1969 and launched the modern gay movement: “The 50th  anniversary of Stonewall is attracting the biggest gay crowds ever assembled in the history of the world to celebrate the accomplishments of LGBTQ people over the past five decades. Here in Brattleboro we will be part of those celebrations with our Pride Festival on the actual day of the riots.” \nLeading off the festival will be Cheryl Fujanic’s just released film Stonewall: The Making of a Monument. Ever since the riots in the streets outside New York City’s Stonewall bar fifty years ago\, people from the queer community have gathered in that spot to express their joy\, their anger\, their pain and their power. Three years ago the site was designated by the Obama Administration as a National Monument. The film was a New York Times Op-Docs film. \nIn recognition of movement pioneers\, CineSLAM will also present Steven F. Dansky’s film From Trauma to Activism. An activist\, writer and photographer for more than 50 years\, now a documentary filmmaker\, Dansky unpacks LGBTQ history with narratives from audacious pathfinders and gay liberationists; dykes and lesbian separatists; radical fairies and queens. \nRounding out our tribute to the past\, Scagliotti and Christopher Dawes have curated a selection of film excerpts from the After Stonewall Productions archive. They call it “The Stonewall Riots were BIG\, but what happened afterward was MONUMENTAL!.” \nThis festival is no simple ode to the past\, for the fight against discrimination that exploded 50 years ago continues. In the wake of the Trump administration’s ban against transgender people serving in the military\, CineSLAM will screen Fiona Dawson’s film Transgender at War and in Love. \nThe Kopkind Colony is a seminar/retreat project for political journalists\, activists and documentary filmmakers. Since 1999 it has been bringing people together for week-long sessions of political and cultural exploration\, intellectual stimulation\, discussion\, workshops and rest\, an experience of provocative ideas\, delicious food and great company amid the pastoral beauty of Guilford\, Vermont\, where Andy Kopkind spent 25 summers with Scagliotti\, his life partner\, a pioneer in gay media and Kopkind’s administrator. \nFollowing the screenings\, there will be Pride Cake and sparkling cider in the lobby! The event is underwritten by a grant from the Chessie Foundation. For more information and to reserve your ticket: www.cineslam.com; or email stonewal@sover.net. \n

SUMMARY:Cheryl Strayed - 'A Wild Life: Growing Through Life's Challenges'
DESCRIPTION:New York Time bestselling author Cheryl Strayed will speak at the Latchis Theatre on Tuesday\, June 25\, at 7:30 p.m.\, in celebration of Brattleboro Area Hospice’s 40th anniversary. \n“A Wild Life: Growing Through Life’s Challenges” is an evening of inspiration\, wisdom and storytelling with Strayed\, author of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling memoir “Wild\,” a book that inspired Oprah Winfrey to revive the popular Oprah’s Book Club and Reese Witherspoon to bring “Wild” to the big screen in 2014. \nUsing her own story of vulnerability and resilience\, Strayed inspires people to find unexpected inner strength in the face of obstacles. At 26\, grieving the death of her mother\, Strayed embarked on a hike all alone of more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mohave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State. Told with suspense and style\, sparkling with warmth and humor\, “Wild” powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened\, strengthened and ultimately healed her. Strayed will discuss her revelations from the trail\, including how we bear the unbearable\, how we move from grief and anger to acceptance and how we keep walking even when it seems impossible to stand. \nThe event is a fundraiser for Brattleboro Area Hospice\, which provides a broad range of volunteer-based services for living and dying well\, focusing on end-of-life\, bereavement and advance card planning. Their programs reflect our community’s values of kindness\, decency and dignity. Founded in 1979 on the belief that no one should die alone\, they are dedicated to offering all services free of charge. \nTickets range from $100 to $25 and are available at brattleborohospice.org. For wheelchair-accessible seating\, call Brattleboro Area Hospice at 802-257-0775.

SUMMARY:One Town at a Time
DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts and Vermont filmmaker Mike Leonard present a screening of “One Town at a Time” at the Latchis Theatre on Saturday\, June 15\, at 4 p.m. \n“One Town at a Time” is a coming-of-age story\, a road trip chronicle\, and a glimpse into the spirit and soul of Vermont\, told through the unique lens of Woodstock native Mike Leonard. \nIn the summer of 2006\, between semesters at college\, Leonard took on the challenge of visiting every town in Vermont by joining the 251 Club – a unique organization dedicated to exploring our state. With his two best friends in tow\, he interviewed people he met along the way and visited some of Vermont’s most celebrated places. \nFast forward to 2018. After living outside Vermont for more than a decade\, Leonard moved back home and decided to revisit the 251 Club – returning to some of the same places he had visited 12 years before and interviewing some of the same people. He witnessed how Vermont has changed\, how it has stayed the same and\, ultimately\, how a humble wayfarer’s club shaped his identity forever. \n“One Town at a Time” is a documentary film sharing this experience – and invitation for others to hop in for a ride around Vermont’s 251 towns and cities. It is a coming-of-age story that combines retro footage from 2006 with contemporary footage to fully reflect Vermont’s changing cultural and physical landscape. It is firmly rooted in the community spirit that makes Vermont’s towns so special and features diverse voices\, including former Gov. Jim Douglas and Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Jerry Greenfield. Viewers will also hear from 251 Club members who share their stories of traveling through Vermont and hopefully entice you to begin your own adventures. \nAdmission is free\, with a suggested of $10 or $12.51 if you want to add a penny for every town in Vermont. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Leonard. The program will last two hours. \nThe Brattleboro showing is part of a statewide summer screening tour of the film. SUMMARY:Met: Live in HD - The Dialogues of the Carmelites
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 11\, opera fans will have a rare opportunity to experience a Met: Live in HD performance on Francis Poulenc’s “The Dialogues of the Carmelites\, at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St.\, at noon. \nCreated in 1955 and based on historical fact\, some background may be helpful: \n“Today\, 40 individuals had their heads cut off\, including 16 Carmelite nuns from Compiegne.” \nThis statement\, dated July 17\, 1794\, from the diary of 69-year-old Celestin Guittard de Floriban\, an avid of public guillotining\, tells us that the opera was inspired by real events. The French Revolution was relentlessly harsh toward contemplative religious orders – Voltaire made the dismissive remark that “They eat\, they pray\, they digest.” \nIn 1792-3\, the monarchy was toppled and the ensuing National Assembly responded by adopting a policy of terror. The Carmelites of Compiegne were convicted of counter-revolutionary offenses\, and\, after a perfunctory trial\, sentenced to death. The sisters went sequentially to their deaths singing the Laudate Dominum. When only a single voice was heard after 15 beheadings\, silence fell. \nMusic director Yannick Nezet-Segiun concludes his first season at the helm. Isabel Leonard and Adrienne Pieczonka sing the leading roles of Blanche de la Force and the new Prioress\, Madame Liodine. Karita Mattila portrays the ailing first prioress Madame de Criossy. The cast also includes Karen Cargill as Mother Marie\, Erin Morley in the role of Sister Constance\, David Portillo as Blanche’s brother\, the Chevalier de la Force\, and Jean-Francois Lapointe in his Met debut as the Marquis de la Force. \nRenee Fleming is the Live in HD host. Running time is 3 hours\, 30 minutes including one intermission. \nTickets are $22 general\, $20 for MET CLUB FOREVER members and $10 for students. For information or advanced ticket purchase\, contact Jon Potter at 802-254-1109\, ext. 3\, or jon@latchisarts.org.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen: Rembrandt
DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts’ popular Exhibition on Screen series\, which features revealing and extraordinary films about the world’s great artists\, continues with “Rembrandt” on Saturday and Sunday\, April 13 and 14 at 4 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre. \nFilmed in exquisite detail\, “Rembrandt” offers a privileged view of the once-in-a-lifetime 2015 Late Works exhibition at Amsterdam’s Rijksmseum and London’s National Gallery. Remrandt’s creativity gathered new energy in the closing years of his life. It is the art of these late years – soulful\, honest and deeply moving – that indelibly defines our image of Rembrandt. With behind-the-scenes access to the preparations of the show\, the film reveals a fresh and fascinating full biography of this great artist. \n“This brilliant\, brave blockbuster reveals the true Rembrandt\,” wrote The Guardian. \nDirected by Kat Mansoor and produced by Phil Grabsky\, the film features interviews with the show’s curators Betsy Wieseman and Jonathan Bikker. Artist Richard Twose demonstrates Rembrandt’s painting technique\, while Delores De Sade illustrates the revolutionary way Rembrandt works with printmaking\, a brand art form at the time. \nThe film also explores the evolution of his artworks from biblical masterpieces such as The Stoning of St. Stephen (1625) to key masterpieces like The Nightwatch (1642)\, through his later accomplishments such as The Jewish bride (1665-69). \n“Rembrandt is one of those artists frequently called an all-time great\, but to really understand the biography you need to look at the detail\, to have someone explain what we’re looking at and why it’s significant\, to really grasp why he’s so revered\,” said Producer Grabsky. “You might have missed this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition when it happened in 2015\, but with our film you have a second chance to explore this genius of paint on the big screen.” \nAdmission to “Rembrandt” is $12\, $6 for students at the door. Running time is 90 minutes. For information\, visit www.latchisarts.org. \n

SUMMARY:Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf
DESCRIPTION:In an evening devoted to gardens and gratitude\, Latchis Arts presents a special screening of the film “Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf” on Saturday\, March 23\, at 4 p.m.\, at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St. \nHailed as a film that “makes lovely visual music\,” “Five Seasons” is stunningly beautiful and worth seeing in its own right. The March 23 screening has special meaning as an opportunity to express thanks to Gordon Hayward\, the noted garden designer and author\, who served for nine years on the board of Latchis Arts\, including four as its president. Hayward selected “Five Seasons” as a film he wished to be shown at the Latchis. \nAfter completing a feature documentary on New York City’s High Line\, award-winning filmmaker Thomas Piper met the inspirational landscape designer Piet Oudolf. “Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf” immerses viewers in Oudolf’s work and takes us inside his creative process\, from his beautifully abstract sketches\, to theories on beauty\, to the ecological implications of his ideas. \nIntimate discussions take place through all four seasons in Oudolf’s own gardens and on visits to his signature public works in New York\, where he designed The High Line\, Chicago and The Netherlands\, as well as far-flung locations that inspire his genius. The film also follows Oudolf as he designs and installs a major new garden at Hauser & Wirth Somerset\, a gallery and arts center in Southwest England\, a garden he considers his best work yet. \nPiet Oudolf has radically refined what gardens can be. As the botanist Rich Darke says in the film\, “your work teaches us to see what we have been unable to see.” Throughout poetic cinematography and unique access\, “Five Seasons” reveals all that Piet sees and celebrates all that we\, as viewers\, have been unable to see. \nEast Bay Times hailed “Five Seasons” as a film “anyone who relishes time in a garden will understand and cherish.” The Chicago Tribune said it “makes lovely visual music.” “Those with a green thumb will be delighted to discover new ways to think about their gardens\,” added the Santa Fe New Mexican. \n“Five Seasons” is produced by Argot Pictures\, and its running time is 74 minutes. \n“Five Seasons” will be shown in the Main Theatre at the Latchis. Admission is by suggested donation of $15 (more is welcome) to benefit Latchis Arts\, the non-profit whose mission is to take care of the Latchis Memorial Building for future generations while promoting and hosting activities there for the benefit of our communities. \nFollowing the screening\, there will be a reception to celebrate Gordon and Mary Hayward’s commitment to the Latchis and our communities at Duo Restaurant\, 136 Main St. \nFor more information\, visit www.latchisarts.org.

SUMMARY:National Theatre Live in HD: The Tragedy of King Richard II

SUMMARY:National Theatre Live in HD: The Madness of King George III
DESCRIPTION:The Latchis Theatre presents its first National Theatre Live simulcast of 2019 this Sunday\, March 10\, with an acclaimed dramatization of a troubled tyrant in “The Madness of King George III.” The program is presented at a special time of 11:30 a.m. \nAlan Bennett\, the award-winning playwright of “The History Boys” and “The Lady in the Van”\, trains his talent on this dark comedy about the final years of King George III’s reign of the United Kingdom. \nSet in England in 1786\, the play finds King George III\, the most powerful man in the world\, increasingly undome by his own erratic behavior\, with his mind unraveling at a dramatic pace. As Queen Charlotte and the Prime Minister try to conceal the king’s illness from his subjects\, royal doctors hopelessly squabble over the correct cure\, subjecting the king to torturous medical treatments. SUMMARY:Burned
DESCRIPTION:Marlboro Productions will present their feature-length environmental documentary at the Latchis Theater in Brattleboro\, VT in two screenings: Thursday\, February 21 at 7:00 pm and February 24th at 4:00 pm. The screenings are part of the BURNED Barnstorming Tour\, a nationwide grassroots media campaign to expose the biomass electric power industry’s destructive forest\, energy\, and climate practices. Following the screenings\, there will be a Q&A with local filmmakers Lisa Merton\, Alan Dater\, and Chris Hardee. \nBURNED tells the little-known story of the accelerating destruction of our forests for electric power generation\, and probes the policy loopholes\, huge subsidies\, and blatant greenwashing of the burgeoning biomass power industry. A dedicated group of forest activists\, ecologists\, carbon scientists\, and concerned citizens fight to establish the enormous value of our forests\, protect their communities\, debunk this false solution to climate change\, and alter energy policy both in the US and abroad. \nThe subject peaked the interest of local filmmakers Alan Dater and Lisa Merton when they first learned about the biomass pellet industry in the southeastern US and the enormous quantity of pelletized trees that are being shipped to power plants in the UK and EU for the generation of electricity. They then started investigating biomass power plants around the country\, including the Burgess Biopower facility in Berlin\, NH and the L’Anse Warden biomass electric facility in L’Anse\, MI\, both documented in the film. \nThroughout the country\, forests and whole trees are being clearcut\, chipped\, and pelletized. Under policy loopholes\, biomass is being substituted for coal and labeled clean\, green\, renewable\, and carbon neutral. Yet the science shows that biomass produces 40-60% more CO2 pollution per unit of energy than the coal it’s replacing. The biomass electricity industry is burning trees at a 25 percent efficiency rate despite the fact that trees sequester carbon better than any technology we’ve invented. \nBURNED has been selected by a number of film festivals including the American Conservation Film Festival\, where it won the Audience Choice Award\, the Wild and Scenic Film Festival\, the Utopia Film Festival\, and the VT International Film Festival\, as well as others. \nFor more information see www.burnedthemovie.com

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen: Young Picasso
DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts’ popular Exhibition on Screen series returns on Saturday and Sunday\, Feb. 16 and 17\, at 4 p.m.\, with “Young Picasso” at the Latchis Theatre\, 50 Main St. \nA pioneering series of cinematic films about exhibitions\, galleries and artists\, Exhibition on Screen takes a fascinating in-depth look at the journey of Pablo Picasso’s life and traces his rise to greatness. Directed by Phil Grabsky\, “Young Picasso” is an extraordinary detective story that looks in detail at the elements that drove one small boy from southern Spain to such heights. Three cities play a key role – Malaga\, Barcelona and Paris – and “Young Picasso” explores each and illustrated why they were so significant. \nIn close collaboration with five major European museums\, “Young Picasso” offers unique insight into the artist’s masterpieces at each of these remarkable institutions\, as well as additional insight from historians\, curators\, letters from old friends and lovers\, and Picasso’s great-grandson\, Oliver Widmaier Picasso. This carefully crafted documentary includes two critical periods in Picasso’s life – the Blue and Pink Periods – but does not overlook the important formative years before then. \nThe Daily Express called it a “fascinating and refreshing documentary.” Film News called it “an illuminating documentary for the art-curious and a legacy film for Picasso enthusiasts.” \nThe 2018-19 season of Exhibition on Screen continues at the Latchis Theatre on April 13 and 14 with Rembrandt\, followed on August 17 and 18 with “Van Gogh and Japan.” \nAdmission for “Young Picasso” is $12\, $6 for students\, at the door. SUMMARY:Juno Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The Juno Orchestra\, Vermont’s newest professional chamber orchestra\, makes its Latchis Theatre debut on Sunday\, Feb. 10\, at 3 p.m.\, with a program titled “Senza Zifiri.” \nJuno founder and music director Zon Eastes conducts this ensemble of musicians from the tri-state area surrounding Brattleboro. The Orchestra is in residence at the Brattleboro Music Center. \nThe program for Feb. 10 highlights Juno Orchestra’s string players and features “Battalia” by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704)\, String Quartet No. 5 by Philip Glass (b. 1937)\, arranged for string orchestra\, and Serenade for Strings\, Op. 22\, by Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904). \nMost humans likely have little stomach for the pains and grief of war. But\, perhaps like journalists\, composers reflect upon all manner of human propensities as they ‘report’ upon the world and our human condition. Biber’s Battalia\, surely one of the most ingenious compositions of its time\, is a spirited reflection on the deeply devastating Thirty Years War that ravaged Europe in the early- to mid-17th century. Brief\, pointed movements create contemporary reactions to a number of elements associated with war: calls to battle\, battle itself\, meetings among divergent cultures\, and finally lament. \nAbout his fifth quartet\, commissioned for the Kronos Quartet in the early 1990s\, Glass has said\, “I was thinking that I had really gone beyond the need to write a serious string quartet and that I could write a quartet that is about musicality\, which in a certain way is the most serious subject.” The five continuously played movements work are rich and compelling\, churning in a full-throated circular and minimalist style. Zon Eastes commented about the piece\, “This quartet offers a particularly grand scope. I performed the quartet many years ago\, and even then\, recognized its potential for string orchestra.” A string bass part has been added to Glass’ score\, and appropriate permissions have been earned from Glass himself. \nIn 1875\, Dvořák was a new father as he wrote the Serenade for Strings\, certainly one of his most beautiful and inviting compositions. Married two years earlier\, he was also on the verge of international success\, having won the Austrian State Prize thanks to the influence of Johannes Brahms\, an ardent fan. The prize provided a significant stipend that allowed Dvořák a focus resulting in a burst of high-quality compositions that solidified his reputation as a top-flight composer. Composed in just two weeks\, the Serenade lifts and lilts through five stunning movements\, finally circling back to the calm and repose of the Serenade’s opening bars. \nFurther information on Juno Orchestra is available at https://junoorchestra.org/juno-orchestra-project/ \nTickets to the concert range from $10-40 and are available by calling the BMC at 802-257-4523\, or at bmcvt.org\, clicking on Buy Tickets Now (link: https://app.arts-people.com/index.php?ticketing=bmcvt). \n
