Following the screenings\, there will be a Q&A with local filmmakers Lisa Merton\, Alan Dater\, and Chris Hardee. \nBURNED tells the little-known story of the accelerating destruction of our forests for electric power generation\, and probes the policy loopholes\, huge subsidies\, and blatant greenwashing of the burgeoning biomass power industry. A dedicated group of forest activists\, ecologists\, carbon scientists\, and concerned citizens fight to establish the enormous value of our forests\, protect their communities\, debunk this false solution to climate change\, and alter energy policy both in the US and abroad. \nThe subject peaked the interest of local filmmakers Alan Dater and Lisa Merton when they first learned about the biomass pellet industry in the southeastern US and the enormous quantity of pelletized trees that are being shipped to power plants in the UK and EU for the generation of electricity. They then started investigating biomass power plants around the country\, including the Burgess Biopower facility in Berlin\, NH and the L’Anse Warden biomass electric facility in L’Anse\, MI\, both documented in the film. \nThroughout the country\, forests and whole trees are being clearcut\, chipped\, and pelletized. Under policy loopholes\, biomass is being substituted for coal and labeled clean\, green\, renewable\, and carbon neutral. Yet the science shows that biomass produces 40-60% more CO2 pollution per unit of energy than the coal it’s replacing. DESCRIPTION:The Juno Orchestra\, Vermont’s newest professional chamber orchestra\, makes its Latchis Theatre debut on Sunday\, Feb. 10\, at 3 p.m.\, with a program titled “Senza Zifiri.” \nJuno founder and music director Zon Eastes conducts this ensemble of musicians from the tri-state area surrounding Brattleboro. The Orchestra is in residence at the Brattleboro Music Center. \nThe program for Feb. 10 highlights Juno Orchestra’s string players and features “Battalia” by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704)\, String Quartet No. 5 by Philip Glass (b. 1937)\, arranged for string orchestra\, and Serenade for Strings\, Op. 22\, by Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904). \nMost humans likely have little stomach for the pains and grief of war. But\, perhaps like journalists\, composers reflect upon all manner of human propensities as they ‘report’ upon the world and our human condition. Biber’s Battalia\, surely one of the most ingenious compositions of its time\, is a spirited reflection on the deeply devastating Thirty Years War that ravaged Europe in the early- to mid-17th century. Brief\, pointed movements create contemporary reactions to a number of elements associated with war: calls to battle\, battle itself\, meetings among divergent cultures\, and finally lament. \nAbout his fifth quartet\, commissioned for the Kronos Quartet in the early 1990s\, Glass has said\, “I was thinking that I had really gone beyond the need to write a serious string quartet and that I could write a quartet that is about musicality\, which in a certain way is the most serious subject.” The five continuously played movements work are rich and compelling\, churning in a full-throated circular and minimalist style. Zon Eastes commented about the piece\, “This quartet offers a particularly grand scope. I performed the quartet many years ago\, and even then\, recognized its potential for string orchestra.” A string bass part has been added to Glass’ score\, and appropriate permissions have been earned from Glass himself. \nIn 1875\, Dvořák was a new father as he wrote the Serenade for Strings\, certainly one of his most beautiful and inviting compositions. Married two years earlier\, he was also on the verge of international success\, having won the Austrian State Prize thanks to the influence of Johannes Brahms\, an ardent fan. The prize provided a significant stipend that allowed Dvořák a focus resulting in a burst of high-quality compositions that solidified his reputation as a top-flight composer. According to legend\, the piece was kept guarded there until a 14-year old Mozart visited the Vatican in 1770. Upon hearing the piece once\, and being stunned by its sublime beauty\, he transcribed it perfectly and brought it to the wider world. \nFrom that early influence on Mozart\, the program moves to his last and unfinished masterpiece\, the Requiem. Mozart’s Requiem contains some of his best-loved and most beautiful writing for the voice and takes performers and listeners alike on a journey from the depths of violent hellfire to the heavenly softness of angel voices. \nThe Brattleboro Concert Choir is the Brattleboro Music Center’s oldest performing ensemble\, and was created by Blanche Moyse\, founder of the BMC.

DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts’ popular Sunday morning Movies for Kids series continues on Sunday\, November 18\, at 11:30 a.m.\, with “Charlotte’s Web.” \nKids – and their big people and anyone who is a kid-at-heart – are invited to showings of movies at the Latchis Theatre on Sunday mornings at 11:30. Admission is by donation\, and the concession stand will be open. The theme for November’s selections is “Lost … and Found\,” highlighting endearing stories of individuals whose challenges in life are made easier by the friends and family they find. \nNovember 18 features “Charlotte’s Web\,” the 2006 G-rated telling of E.B. White’s classic story of Wilbur the pig and the spider who befriends him and saves him. Common Sense Media praised the film and said it was appropriate for ages 5 and up. \nNovember’s series concludes on November 25 with “Annie\,” the 1982 musical about a plucky young girl who charms her way out of an orphanage and into the hearts of an unlikely loving family. SUMMARY:The Met: Live in HD - Marnie
DESCRIPTION:The Met:Live in HD series continues at the Latchis Theatre on Saturday\, November 10\, at 1 p.m.\, with the North American premiere of “Marnie” by Vermont-born composer Nico Muhly and librettist Nicholas Wright. \nBased on Winston Graham’s haunting novel\, which inspired the classic Alfred Hitchcock film\, “Marnie” is the tale of a beautiful woman in late-1950s England running from a mysterious past\, who assumes a series of new names\, identities and physical appearances. Marnie is caught in her deceit by businessman Mark Rutland\, who blackmails her into marrying him. Stripped of her life of lies\, Marnie is forced to face the truth and her future\, without the deceptions on which she has relied for so long. \nMoving quickly through cinematically structured scenes\, Muhly and Wright illuminate Marnie’s inner life using a variety of musical textures and literary techniques. One innovation of Muhly’s score is its use of a madrigal-like chorus of four women – Marnie’s Shadows – who follow Marnie throughout the opera\, giving voice to her turbulent and confused inner thoughts. \nBorn in Randolph\, Vermont\, Muhly has risen to become a wunderkind of the contemporary musical scene\, crossing genres to collaborate with a variety of other artists. He studied composition with John Corigliano and was a protégé of Philip Glass. He is the youngest composer ever to be commissioned by The Met\, for “Two Boys\,” which was staged at The Met in 2013. He has ties to the Brattleboro area. In 2009\, the Brattleboro Concert Choir commissioned a piece from him and performed “Jubilate” as part of its celebration on Blanche Moyse’s centennial. Muhly has also collaborated with area native sons Thomas Bartlett and Sam Amidon on musical projects. \nThe cast is led by mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as Marnie. Baritone Christopher Maltman is her husband and rival\, Mark Rutland\, and countertenor Iestyn Davies is Mark’s borther.
