March 1, 2020 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Latchis Arts’ popular Movies for Kids series continues this month with the popular Miyazaki in March series, featuring films by the great Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki. The films are presented Sundays at 11:30 a.m. through March. Admission is by donation.

The series opens on Sunday, March 1, with “My Neighbor Totoro,” a 1988 animated adventure which follows schoolgirl Satsuke and her younger sister Mei as they settle into an old country house with their father and wait for their mother to recover from an illness. As the sisters explore their new home, they befriend playful spirits in their house and the nearby forest.

The series continues March 8, with “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” a 1989 fantasy/drama which features 13-year-old Kiki, whose moves to a seaside town with her talking cat Jiji to spend a year alone, in accordance with her village’s tradition for witches in training. After learning to control her broomstick, Kiki sets up a flying courier service and soon becomes a fixture in town. But when the insecure young witch begins questioning herself and loses her magic, she must overcome her self-doubt to get her powers back. The film is Rated G and runs 1 hour and 43 minutes. It has a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a perfect 5 star rating on Common Sense Media, which rates it appropriate for ages 5 and up.

On March 15, the series continues with “Ponyo,” a 2008 fantasy drama, which is Rated G and has 92% percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. During a forbidden excursion to see the surface world, a goldfish princess encounters a human boy who gives her the name Ponyo. As their friendship grows, Ponyo becomes more humanlike. Her father brings her back to the ocean kingdom, but Ponyo’s wish to live on the surface is so strong that she breaks free, and in the process spills a collection of magical elixirs that endanger the boy’s village. Common Sense Media gives it 4 stars and rates it appropriate for ages 5 and up.

The series continues March 22, with “Castle in the Sky,” a PG fantasy/action story about young orphan Sheeta and her kidnapper, who are flying to prison when their plane is attacked by air pirates. Escaping thanks to a magic crystal she wears, Sheeta meets fellow orphan Pazu, and the pair join forces to discover a mystical floating city. The film has a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Common Sense Media says the film is best for ages 9 and up.

The series continues on March 29 with “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind,” a 1984 drama/fantasy that is rated PG. Far in the future, after conflict has destroyed much of the world’s ecosystem, the few surviving humans live in scattered healthy environments. Under the guidance of the warrior Lord Yupa, Nausicaa works to bring peace back to the ravaged planet. The film has a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. Common Sense Media gives 4 stars and says it’s suited for ages 10 and up.
