Movies for Kids: Ponyo
Latchis Arts’ Movies for Kids series continues in March on Sunday mornings – except for one Saturday – at 11 a.m., at the Latchis Theatre, 50 Main St. Admission is by donation.
The theme is Miyazaki in March, and the focus for the month is on the brilliant animated films of Japanese director, producer, writer and artist Hayao Miyazaki. Over a career that spans more than five decades, Miyazaki has won international acclaim as a masterful storyteller and animator. Film critic Roger Ebert has held Miyazaki up as a maybe the best animated filmmaker of all time.
Miyazaki in March opens this Sunday, March 5, at 11 a.m., with “Ponyo,” the 2008 film about a friendship that develops between a 5-year-old boy and a goldfish princess named Ponyo who longs to become human.
“Children will love this,” said Ruth Hessey, of Movie Time ABC Radio National. “It’s classic Miyazaki.”
“Ponyo” is Rated G and runs 1 hour and 41 minutes.
The series continues with a special Saturday showing on March 11, at 11 a.m., of “Howl’s Moving Castle.” Returning to Sundays, the series features “Spirited Away” on March 19 and “My Neighbor Totoro” on March 26.
