Instructions on Parting

September 26, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Hailed as “an unforgettable experience,” the film “Instructions on Parting” had its world premiere last February in New York at the Museum of Modern Art Doc Fortnight Festival and later won acclaim and honors at other film festivals in the United States and abroad.

On Wednesday, September 26, Brattleboro audiences will have a chance to see Amy Jenkins’ profound and moving examination of transformation, grief and the collective human journey at the Latchis Theatre, at 7 p.m. Jenkins will be on hand to lead a discussion of the film after the screening.

Over the course of one tumultuous year, artist and director Amy Jenkins confronts the cancer diagnoses of her mother, sister and brother, and also welcomes her first child. Crafted in a unique visual style, the film weaves breathtaking vignettes of natural unfolding with cinema verite family footage to lead viewers to a bold and daring acceptance of our common mortality. Made from Jenkins’ video journals and narrated through archived answering machine messages, “Instructions on Parting” is both deeply personal and profoundly universal.

“A deeply moving, tautly poetical diary of multiple loss … Transcendent insights folded into the film’s rich, rhythmic structure, stay with you long after the ending,” wrote David Broady of Artcritical.

The Peterborough, N.H.-based Jenkins may be familiar to Brattleboro art audiences. Her film and video art installations “Flow” and “The Audrey Samsara” were exhibited at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center. Jenkins’ installations, films and photography have been exhibited, screened and collected internationally. He works focus on themes such as familial relationships, desire and gender identity and have been featured at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Haifa Museum in Israel and countless other art institutions. Jenkins was chosen to be a LEF Foundation Robert Flaherty Film Seminar Fellow and a two-time nominee for the CalArts Alpert Award in Film/Video.
