Exhibition on Screen: Young Picasso

February 16, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Latchis Arts’ popular Exhibition on Screen series returns on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16 and 17, at 4 p.m., with “Young Picasso” at the Latchis Theatre, 50 Main St.

A pioneering series of cinematic films about exhibitions, galleries and artists, Exhibition on Screen takes a fascinating in-depth look at the journey of Pablo Picasso’s life and traces his rise to greatness. Directed by Phil Grabsky, “Young Picasso” is an extraordinary detective story that looks in detail at the elements that drove one small boy from southern Spain to such heights. Three cities play a key role – Malaga, Barcelona and Paris – and “Young Picasso” explores each and illustrated why they were so significant.

In close collaboration with five major European museums, “Young Picasso” offers unique insight into the artist’s masterpieces at each of these remarkable institutions, as well as additional insight from historians, curators, letters from old friends and lovers, and Picasso’s great-grandson, Oliver Widmaier Picasso. This carefully crafted documentary includes two critical periods in Picasso’s life – the Blue and Pink Periods – but does not overlook the important formative years before then.

The Daily Express called it a “fascinating and refreshing documentary.” Film News called it “an illuminating documentary for the art-curious and a legacy film for Picasso enthusiasts.”

The 2018-19 season of Exhibition on Screen continues at the Latchis Theatre on April 13 and 14 with Rembrandt, followed on August 17 and 18 with “Van Gogh and Japan.”

Admission for “Young Picasso” is $12, $6 for students, at the door. For information, visit www.latchisarts.org.
