National Theatre Live in HD: The Tragedy of King Richard II

March 16, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Latchis Arts continues its National Theatre Live presentations with another tale of a troubled tyrant with Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of King Richard II on Saturday, March 16, at 4 p.m., at the Latchis Theatre, 50 Main St., Brattleboro.

In a bold re-telling of this Shakespeare history play, Simon Russell Beale stars in the title role. This stripped-back version, produced by the Almeida Theatre,  runs just 100 minutes without an intermission and focuses on the essence of the story – a power struggle between two failing leaders, ruling a divided country. The staging is visceral and modern, powerful and intense.

Directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins and co-starring Leo Bill as Bolingbroke, the play enjoyed excellent reviews, with critics enjoying the parallels between Shakespeare’s story and the UK in its current political and leadership crisis over Brexit. “A timely portrait of a country in chaos,” wrote the Evening Standard.

Tickets are $20 for general admission, $10 for students. Contact Jon Potter for questions and advance credit card purchases at jon@latchisarts.org or 802-254-1109, ext. 3. For more information, visit latchisarts.org.
