The popular Off the Beaten Path series returns to the Latchis Theatre, 50 Main St., this weekend with screenings of “A Fantastic Woman,” the 2018 Academy Award-winner for Best Foreign Language Film.

Showings of “A Fantastic Woman,” which has a 94% score on the Rotten Tomatoes review site, will be held at the Latchis on Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6, at 4 p.m.

Off the Beaten Path features films that might have slipped by under the radar but are worth seeing. More selections will be announced for the series soon. “A Fantastic Woman” certain qualifies as a film worth seeing.

It stars Daniela Vega and Francisco Reyes as Marina and Orlando, who are in love and planning for the future. Marina is a young waitress and aspiring singer. When tragedy strikes, Marina, a trans woman, struggles against resentment, discrimination and suspicion for the right to be herself. She battles the same forces she has spent her whole life fighting to become the woman she is now – a complex, strong, forthright and fantastic woman.

“Fantastic is one word for it. Another would be outstanding,” wrote Adam Graham of the Detroit News. Calvin Wilson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote, “In our increasingly polarized time, ‘A Fantastic Woman’ bridges the gap between ignorance and understanding through the transcendent power of art.”

“A Fantastic Woman” is Rated R for language, sexual content and violence.
